Student Name: Elephants

Activity: The Dice Game

Age Group: 3

Date of Activity: TBD

Wisconsin Model Early Learning Standards Addressed (write out standard in its entirety,
including developmental domain, standard and applicable substandard): Cognition & General
Knowledge
Performance Standard Mathematical Thinking B.EL.1 Demonstrates understanding of numbers
and counting
Developmental Continuum: Recognizes some numerals and associates number concepts with
print materials in a meaningful way
How will you check to see if the standard(s) is/are met? (What will you look for, observe or ask about
children to know they learned what you wanted them to learn?)
Observe interaction with materials
Ask questions such as: What number is this? How do you know? How many dots? Can you find the
number ___?
Materials and Set Up Needed (Include all items needed for the activity including materials/supplies,
books, etc. Include the name and author of books; attach words/actions to songs and finger-plays; identify
any specific set up that may be required):
Numeric Templates binder
Large Die or 2
Music Roll the Dice From Disney Shake It Up CD
Introduction (Include a visual or other creative attention getting technique; relate the introduction to the
activity): Play the music and dance while holding the large die, leading the children to the large group
area
Procedure (order of the activity):
Place or tape the templates around the room. .. Separately or together depending on what the goal is. You
can also tape them up together so they correspond with matching numbers.
Turn on the music to draw attention to the game. Gather children in the large group area
Explain the rules of the game. Rules may change as children master skills. Explain any changes so
children are not surprised at new rules.
Play the game (Instructions located in Dice Game binder)
Closure/Transition (What will you say/do to let the children know the activity is over, to review lessons
learned, and to transition the children to the next activity; relate the closure to the activity just
completed?) Wow, that was fun. What did we learn today? Can you show me the number___? How do
you know that is a ___? Show me on your fingers how many is ___.
Modifications made for individuals: As children master skills, I would change the rules and templates.
You can play using a musical chairs-elimination style, use multiple dice and incorporate addition or
subtraction. Using numbers written out as words helps with literacy as well as the understanding of that
numbers can be represented by word, numeral and picture.
