1. Course description: Biology is the study of life. This course is designed to teach students the
concepts and principles of life science. Our main focus of study will be human and plants. The
curriculum emphasizes laboratory skills and techniques. We will develop critical investigative skills as
we study organisms, events, systems, and processes.
Biology may include labs that have dissections. Students with religious or ethical reasons that prohibit
them from participation must contact the teacher concerning alternatives prior to the lab. Biology is a
required course for graduation in the state of Arizona.

3. Grading system:
100 90 = A

89-80 = B

79 - 70 = C

69 60 = D

40 % = Assessments This may include tests, quizzes, projects, notebook/folder checks.


30 % = Assignments This includes ALL written class work.
20 % = Laboratory Activities This includes labs and other hands on activities.
10 % = Performance This includes bell work.
There are 2 (9 week) terms per semester. The semester grade is made up of the term grade weighted
80% and a FINAL ASSESSMENT weighted 20%.
504 and IEP plans will be used to modify the grading procedure as needed.
Grades can be accessed from Student Vue at any time. Use the district home page to access this to

4. Title 1 Program: Academic tutoring and test preparation is available to all students. Additional
support for passing classes and graduating on time is the intent of these services. Support through Title
I funding is available in the areas of: math, reading and English. If interested, please contact the

5. Make-up Policy: If you are absent or miss class for any reason, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE for making up
the work. See your teacher the day you return to get make up assignments. A zero will remain until the
work is made up. Assignments can be made up on your time, during Saturday school, or during
advisory.
Many labs and activities cannot be made up if you are absent. Your grade for that lab will be a zero.
Each semester you may drop one lab. If you have not missed any labs, you will be able to drop your
lowest score.
6. Attendance: Absent is defined as nonattendance in an assigned class or activity for more than onehalf of the period. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
Tardy is defined as not being in the assigned class or activity when the tardy bell has finished ringing.

Students may fail the class for the semester in any course, when reaching a total of 12
excused/unexcused absences and after school-documented interventions have been exhausted.
