Anticipatory Set
Today we will meet some new friends who are also friends
with my good friends Bossy R. Our new friends only like words
similar to their r-controlled sounds in their names. Last night
there was a huge windstorm and all their words fell off. They
need your help to fix themselves.
Procedures
Review the Bossy R Poster. Remind students that Bossy
R controls the vowels sound and gives it a new sound.

Introduce our new friends. This is my friend Ford the
/or/ Snorkeler. He only likes words that have /or/ in
them like snorkeler. This is my friend Bart the /ar/ Shark
Pirate. He only likes words that have /ar/ in them like
shark. Lastly, this is Super /er/ /ir/ /ur/ Girl. She only likes
words that have /er/ /ir/ /ur/ in them. Do you think you
can help them find their words?
Pass out the worksheet. As we come up and help new
friends find their words, write each word in the correct
spot on our worksheets.
Call students up one by one. Read the word, tap it out
and have the student place it on the correct poster. As
this student posts it to the poster have students write in
the word on their papers. Ask the class if they were
correct.
Repeat this until all the words are up.
Review each r-controlled sound and words on each
paper.
Our new friends are happy again! Thanks for all the
help!
Now that we are pros at our r-controlled sounds, lets
go back to our seats and try a word sort on our own. Cut
out each word and place it under the correct r-controlled
sound.

Differentiation
For students who may be struggling, have a buddy work with
them on the word sort as well as provide extra support.
VI. Closure
Collect worksheets for review. To end ask to listen carefully
and listen for the r-controlled sounds. Say a few different
words and have students point to on the posters or say which
r-controlled sound is in each word.
VII. Formative/Summative Assessments of Students
Formative: Check students worksheets throughout the lesson.
Summative: Collect worksheets for assess students
understanding of r-controlled words.

Reflection on Planning
Teaching Wilson can be very boring. I wanted to bring some
excitement to it by introducing these new posters. Its
something different and I think the students will really enjoy
it. Students are used to using the SmartBoard but
unfortunately, this week the board is broken so I had to think
outside of the box. I had to go back to the basics. This will be
something that can hang in the classroom all day and
students will be able to review it whenever theyd like. Not
only will students be practicing their r-controlled sounds, but
they will be creating their own resource they can look back at
when ever they need help.
Reflection on Instruction
This lesson went very well. Students enjoyed doing something
different. They seemed to really enjoy the posters and meet
our new friends. Students seemed to grasp the concept very
easily. I believe this was a successful lesson
