Reading Response #4

1.

Write a one paragraph summary of what the Lexile Framework is.

The Lexile Framework consists of two different measurements. The first is the Lexile
Reader measurement. For this measurement, a student is given a Lexile number that is
determined via information from a standardized test. This number is scaled based on
reading ability, with higher numbers representing a higher ability of reading. The second
measurement is the Lexile text measurement, in which the difficulty level of a text is
determined through an analysis tool using various elements of the text. The text is also
assigned a Lexile number that corresponds to reader ability. When the two measurements
are similar, the text is typically a good match for the reader.

2.

How and why might a classroom teacher use the Lexile Framework?
The Lexile Framework serves as a text selection guide for both teachers and students.
This tool can be used to ensure students are reading just right books. It is important for
students to experience books that provide a challenge for them, but dont frustrate them in
the process. Using their Lexile number, you or the student can easily find books that fall
in this just right range. The Lexile Framework can also help us identify whether the
texts we are selecting to use in class-wide activities are at an appropriate grade level.
At the same time, I feel that it is important to realize that its not necessary to only ever
read books within this range. As much as it is important for students to be challenged
appropriately, it is also important for students to feel motivated to read. Sometimes, a
book outside a students reading level (below or above!) may be just what they need to
spark their love of learning. Ive talked about this many times, but my sister was a very
clear example of this. As always, using your discretion is key!

3.

Using the I dont know my Lexile Number interface, determine estimated Lexile scores
for your students.
These are my students estimated scores:
A - 910L to 1160L
This student has given me a lot of evidence that she would require books above the average
student at her grade level. She has told me quite extensively about her love of reading Harry
Potter and similar books. Harry Potter books range from 880L to 980L, and she is obviously

comfortable at this level. Her reading and writing during our lessons together has also
definitely exceeded my expectations!
T - 630L to 910L
In our time together, this student appears to be around grade level to me. She was able to
complete reading and writing activities, such as writing paragraph responses to prompts and
identifying resources during a read-aloud of The Goat in the Rug. She has given me no
reason to believe that she would struggle to read books at her grade level.
B - 90L to 630L
Unfortunately, I was able to spend very little time with this student due to him arriving very
late every week. It is very possible that his struggles with completing literacy-based activities
were because he missed a large chunk or all of the content parts of the lesson. However, I
believe that the reason we was so late every day was due to him being in interventions.
Therefore, this leads me to believe that he may require a lower Lexile number.

Lexile Analyzer Scores The Goat in the Rug by Charles L. Blood and Martin Link
Passage:
I remember it was a warm, sunny afternoon. Glenmae had spent most of the morning
sharpening a large pair of scissors. I had no idea what she was going to use them for, but it didnt
take me long to find out. Before I knew what was happening, I was on the ground and Glenmae
was clipping off my wool in great long strands. (Its called mohair, really.) It didnt hurt at all,
but I admit I kicked up my heels some. Im very ticklish for a goat! I might have looked a little
naked and silly afterwards, but my, did I feel nice and cool! So I decided to stick around and see
what would happen next.

Results:
Lexile Measure: 830L
Mean Sentence Length: 14.75
Mean Log Word Frequency: 3.86
Word Count: 118

I was also able to find the book by searching its title. The website identifies the whole book as
having a Lexile measure of 660L. So, it seems that this book varies a little throughout. Based on
these numbers, I believe this book was a good fit for my students overall. It sits about right in the
middle of the Lexile range for an average student at their grade level (630L to 910L). Since I

read this book aloud to the group, this works out well because in this context because my
purpose was for them to experience the many different resources that go into a product. In this
context, I want to choose a book that is accessible by as many of my students as possible. Even
though B was not present for this read-aloud, I dont believe he would have struggled to
comprehend the text even if it was a little above his level as I was the one reading it to the
group.
