doonaregularbasisthatIdontstopandthinkabout.AsMcWhortersaid,textingisanemerging
complexity(McWhorter)andhasbecomeawholenewlanguage.Thistopicismainlypointingtowardsyoung
peoplebecauseletsfaceit,wetextalot.AsMcWhortergaveexamplesofwhatlanguageandwritinglooked
likedecadesandevencenturiesago,ittrulyshowedhowdifferentourlanguageis.Hewasexplainingthat
languageisourspeech,whichishowpeoplehavetalkedsince,well,forever.Writinghappenedmuchlater,
whichisnottypicallyhowwespeak.Somepeoplesaywearesupposedtowritelikewespeak,andthats
whentextingcomein.Wedontnormallyworryaboutcapitalizationorcommas,neitherdowewhenwe
speak.Ipersonallythinkitiscrazytothinkabouthowmuchthelanguagehasevolved.InMcWhorters
conclusion,hebroughtupagreatpoint.Icannotimaginewhatthelanguagewillbedevelopedintodecades
downtheroad.LikeMcWhorter,Iamcurioustoseewhata16yearoldgirlstextingconversationwouldlook
like.Theslangwouldbecompletelydifferentaswellasthestructure.Ialsofeelliketheoldergenerationthat
grewupnothavingphonesingeneralmuchlesscellphonesoftenaredisgustedbyhowmuchweas
humansuseourcellphonesinourdaytodaylife.However,theyfeelthatwaybecausenothavingaphone
isallthattheyknow.Now,growingupwithoutacellphoneisalmostunheardof,itisnotapartofthenorm.
Textingcanoftenbelookedatfromeldersattimesasdisrespectful.Icanunderstandwheretheyarecoming
from,butthisishowthelanguagehasdevelopedanditisonlygoingtoprogressintosomethingelse.Like
McWhortersaid,itisalinguisticmiraclehappeningrightunderournoses.
