What can be Gained from Enc 1102?
Although this spring semester has flown by, it would be nearly
impossible for a student-no matter how impressive their reading and writing
abilities-to walk out of the classroom without a deepened set of skills. The
University of Central Floridas English department has done an excellent job
at creating a curriculum that is original, and therefore providing students
with new and applicable skills. What I appreciated most from the class was
that I felt each assignment was worth investing more than just the average
expected effort because every topic was tailored towards our individual
majors meaning all the time I spent on my research was time I am investing
into my future by learning about the field of my profession.
Under each assignment tab within this portfolio, an individual reflection
may be found accompanying each major assignment completed. If you so
choose to read into these, you will see how each assignment we did
complimented a course objective. The genre analysis for example, correlates
with the objective, Consider the ways that genres emerge from and function
in academic and professional discourse communities. This assignment had
me researching the furthest into the hospitality field and analyzing aspects I

hadnt looked at in the past such as how each article within the industry is
formatted in a nearly identical manor.
Aside from our major papers, another aspect of the class was reading
scholarly articles and posting responses in a class discussion. One article we
read by Greene discussed how to effectively frame. I found the content from
the article very transferable to writing in any genre. The discussion posts
overall helped me practice another objective which is, identifying available
choices in writing and editing and making the strongest choice such as we
do each time we choose a supporting quote to back up an idea.
Our 1102 semester ends by proposing a research project in an area we
feel is under discussed thus far within our chosen discourse community. For
my project, I wanted to know the general job satisfaction found within the
higher level employees such as those holding management positions. Due to
the fact that I am still an undergraduate in hospitality management, I do not
have the means to access the employees holding these positions. Instead, I
proposed a hypothetical survey through which I inquire from at least 100
employees the average hours worked, how much value they see themselves
as to the company, their salary, and overall job satisfaction. I would conduct
this same survey to those in part time positions below management and
compare results to find the key to improving employee retention on the entry
level positions to match the loyalty of those in management positions. This
research niche would benefit the industry overall if the results are applied in
that the management of lower level employees is similar in fashion to how

the upper levels operate where there is high job satisfaction and retention.
This survey will conclude and add valuable discussion to the issue of high
employee turnover rates within the hospitality industry. My final research
product would not have been possible without the skills and building blocks
1102 has instilled in me over the course of this past semester.
