January 2010 Perus government upholds a 25 year jail sentence given to


former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori the previous April for using
government security measures to carry out kidnappings and killings of 25

May 2010 Indigenous leader Alberto Pizango is released on bail after
detained when found returning to his home after spending nearly a year in
exile. He was accused of provoking protests associated with planned oil and
gas exploration in Perus rainforest that became violent and resulted in the
deaths of several persons.

January 2011 A controversial road connecting Perus Pacific seaboard with
Brazils Atlantic coast is opened.

May 2012 In the southern province of Espinar (close to Cusco), a national
emergency is declared due to anti-mining protests turning violent.

July-September 2012 Another national emergency is declared after
protests in the north become violent over the Conga mining project
(protesters argue that the mining will destroy water supplies and cause
pollution). Justice minister Juan Jimenez Mayor is appointed after Oscar
Valdes quits because of the death of 5 Conga protesters. In September, the
nation is pulled out of a state of emergency though security forces remain
intact and alert.
January 2013 7 people are killed in a Peruvian helicopter crash, including
several Americans. The team was supporting oil exploration operations near
Pucallpa, Peru , when the helicopter they were riding crashed. It is unclear
as to what caused the crash.

January 2014 A maritime dispute that had gone on for six years was
settled between Peru and Chile. A new maritime border was drawn and Chile

was stripped of economic rights over a portion of the Pacific Ocean. Peru was
given most of its requested area.
February 2015 Three sailors are accused of leaking information to the
neighboring country of Chile. President Ollanta Humala has stated that if the
espionage is confirmed, it will have a very serious effect on bilateral relations
