Original Card Game
Introduction: Card games come in many varieties, with many popular examples
throughout history. Most card games involve some basic elements such as discarding, card
exchanging, and matching to name a few. Lets see how creative you are by using one or
more of these elements to create your own card game.

Lesson:
1. You and your partner will create a simple original card game using one or more of the
play patterns covered in the Unit 1.5 History of Cards PowerPoint. Remember cards
can be anything. Do not use the four standard playing card suits. Be creative. You
can research online for some ideas (see examples below).
2. Sketch your idea in the Design Journal and obtain approval from your teacher.
3. Write the rules for your game in a Word document.
4. Create the cards in a 2D drawing package like Paint. Use the template 1.53 Card
Template for the correct size. The template is a jpeg file and can be opened in any
program you use. You can use clipart or free images from the Internet. Using card
stock, print out your finished cards. Then cut out and assemble your cards.
5. Play-test your game and revise the rules as needed. Print the rules when satisfied.
Include the rules with your cards.
6. Exchange games with your classmates and evaluate the games using 1.53 Game
Evaluations handout.
Extension: Design and print a box to hold your card game. See the template 1.54 Card Box
Template.
