Teacher: Andrea List

Grade Level/Subject Area: 1st Grade/Science

Standard: 1.E.1. Recognize the features and patterns of the earth/moon/sun system as
observed from Earth.

Learning Objective: 1. Given a topographical map of the United States, students will
be able to label the continents, the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, and one mountain range with 75%
accuracy. 2. Given features of the sun and moon, students will be able to explain their
importance with 100% accuracy. 3. Given a lined piece of paper, students will be able to explain
how the Earth rotates around the sun to cause day and night with 100% accuracy. 4. Given a
lined piece of paper, students will be able to explain how the moon rotates around the Earth with
100% accuracy.
Required Materials: SMART Board lesson, computer, YouTube videos, worksheet
with pictures of the Earth, Moon, and Sun, crayons, scissors, glue, black construction paper,
black marker, lined paper, pencils, drawing paper, topographical map worksheet, moon and sun
worksheet,
Anticipatory Set: I will begin this lesson by having the students sit on the carpeted area
in front of the SMART Board. I will be creating the lesson using SMART Notebook and
presenting it to the students. To gain the students attention I will play a YouTube video about
the solar system. The video involves a song and explanation of the planets, sun, and moon.
After we review previous knowledge and watch the video, I will explain to the students that they
will be learning about the features of the Earth. I will begin by asking if they can identify any of
the Earths features before we begin the lesson. The students will learn about a few features
including bodies of water, continents, mountain ranges, and deserts. I will also explain that they
will be learning about the features of both the sun and the moon. I will begin by asking if they
can identify any of the sun or moons features. The students will learn about a few features of
both the sun and the moon. Students will also learn how the moon rotates around the Earth and
how both the Earth and moon rotate around the sun.

Instruction: After our review of previous knowledge and explanation of the material that
will be covered I will use the SMART Board to begin presenting the lesson. The first slide will
be a picture of the solar system. The second slide will be an interactive activity where students
can write the features of the Earth. A picture of the Earth will be in the center with small circles
that come off the picture where students will write their answers. The third slide will feature a
picture of the Earth and a button to press that will play a YouTube video. Below the picture will
be facts about the Earth. We will also discuss how the moon rotates around the Earth.
I will begin presenting information on the SMART Board about the moon. The fourth slide will
feature a picture of the moon with small circles that come off the picture where students will
write the different features of the moon. The fifth slide will feature a picture of the moons

phases and below it will list facts about the moon. I will click on the picture to play a YouTube
video.
After the discussion about the moon we will move into the features of the sun. The sixth slide
will feature a picture of the sun with small squares that come off the picture where students will
write the different features of the sun. The seventh slide will feature a picture of the sun with a
list of facts about the sun. We will also discuss how the Earth and Moon rotate around the Sun
causing night and day.
Guided Practice: Before students begin their guided practice activities I will model the rotation
of the Earth and Moon using student volunteers. The first student will come to the front of the
room and act as the sun. The second student will stand about 10 feet away from the sun to
represent the Earth. Finally the third student will stand about 3 feet away from the Earth to
represent the moon. I will then have the Earth and Moon students begin to slowly turn in a circle
with the moon moving around the earth. I will then have the Earth and moon students slowly
turn and rotate around the sun student.
Students will then return to their seats to work on an individual assignment. Students will be
given a topographical map of the United States which includes the continents, oceans, and
mountain ranges. Students will also receive separate cards that have each feature identified on it
for the students to correctly place on the map. I will go around the room to ensure that they are
placing the cards in the correct location and providing assistance.
Students will then be separated into groups of 2-3 students. Each group will find a spot within
the classroom to sit, either on the floor or at a desk. Each group will be given a feature of the
earth, sun, or moon. Each group will talk about the feature and then create a picture that
represents their feature. I will go around to each group to listen to their discussion and
explanation of their picture. I will also provide necessary feedback to ensure they understand the
lesson and the features.

Independent Practice/Assessment: Independent practices will take place at

home and be assessed after students have turned in their assignment the following day.
A topographical map of Earth will be given to the students to complete at home. Students will be
required to color and label the different features of the Earth. Students will also be required to
use a lined piece of paper to write a short summary explaining how the moon rotates around the
Earth and how the Earth and moon rotate around the sun.

Students will be given a list of features for the sun and moon. Students will then select 2 features
of the sun and 2 features of the moon that they would like to include in an oral presentation. The
students will have the opportunity to create a picture that shows the features they selected. The
students will also write 3-5 sentences explaining the sun and moons features and present their
information to the class.

Closure: Students will be sitting on the carpeted area in the classroom. I will use the
SMART Board to do a review with the students. The eighth slide will feature a picture of the
Earth with a red question mark on it. There will be 10 review questions that will be made up of
information that was discussed during the lesson. I will then inform the students of the next
topic they will be learning about.
