PROPSAL FOR JAZ 101

Abstract
Music has always been a huge part of this world. Almost anywhere you go you
will hear music playing and a lot of that music you hear is influence by jazz. Jazz is a
style of music that always seems to be around and with this class I would like to teach the
students of Jefferson Tech and Community College about the history, where it comes
from and the influences it has on music today. Jazz still has an incredible influence and I
would like to see that continue.

Introduction

Jazz History 101 will teach about jazz in a social world and the history. The
course will use a David Ace book called Jazz Cultures. The book will cover how jazz
influenced so much in the twentieth centuries and how if influenced the musicians. This
course will also show an e-book called Jazz Then and Now by Frank Leanza and this
book will compare and contrast jazz though out the ages. By the end I hope for the
students to better see that though music is always changing that doesnt mean that its
looking its roots.
A guest musician has been asked to come play for the class and answer any
questions the students may have for them about being a musician. If the Department of
Music could provide a television that was be greatly appreciated so I can show the
students movies on the 20s and movies on the most influential musician of that time
period. This will be a 101 class so it will be mostly taken by freshmen and there may be a
102 available to take the following semester. This is a pass/fail course and you may
repeat it once it you fail the first time. This class is a in person course and there will be
three excused absences. Class will meet two times a week and it is an elective.
Course Goals and Outcomes

o

The goals of this course are:

To share the history of jazz music
To be more aware of the influences jazz has on music
To strengthen their love for jazz music
To better understand the cultures that jazz comes from

An outcome for this class is to be better educated on jazz so that the student can go
out into the world and be a music teacher and have the full knowledge that they would
need to teach others about this subject or because its an elective then maybe some

students were just interested in learning more about the subject. The students could also
want to pursue something in the music field so they wanted to have an idea of what they
were talking about.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
(1) Better love the music style.
(2) Understand jazz thought out the years
(3) Choose there favorite jazz musician
(4) Be

Justification
This course is for students that are interested in music. They dont necessarily
need to be looking into a career in music but they will want to have a genuine interest in
the subject. Some of the students may be music business majors or musical history. This
class will broaden there knowledge on jazz music and its especially needed if the student
wants to be a music teacher.

Implementation
If there are student out there that arent that educated on jazz but are still
interested then this is the class for them. In this course the teacher will break jazz down
into four parts and will really go in depth on the subject so that that students fully
understand the history and everything else that comes along with that.

Planning Specifications
For the class Jazz History I plan on throwing a small jazz festival outside, ,where
there will be music and games to get the word out about the class. The supplies the
students will need to come prepared to class with pen, paper, folder and there book Jazz
Culture. I will be showing power points for the students to follow along with and take

notes. it will be a class for fifteen to twenty students. There will be four test over each
section and there will not be a final exam rather there will be a group project over all that
they learned through out the semester.

Content Specifications
This course will be broken up into four sections. The first section will be about
the book Jazz Culture. The second section of this course will be the people of jazz. The
third section will be about the type of jazz that there are and the forth will be about the
book Jazz-Then and Now. Each section will have a test over the materials they learned
during that unit. The students will also have a project to do during the people of jazz
section, for the project the students will get a list of musicians that they can choose from
and then they will do a project on that musician. This will be a pass fail so as long as the
students try there best then they should all be ok.

Budget
Listed in the table below are the materials I would like to have for this class. I
asked for a record player and records because I personally think it sounds better. Im also
asking for DVDs to show the students jazz history with more of a visual. Im asking for a
musician so the students can hear and see the passion the musician is feeling
