PROPOSAL TO IMPROVE COLLEGE ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
Introduction
In the view of the student committee ,the college at present does too little to conserve
natural resources, reduce pollution in all its activities and influence and encourage others
to be more aware of the environmental issues.
Efficient use of energy
From our own observations, there is considerable waste in terms of energy, including
lighting, water heating and refrigeration. However, at present, staff and students appear
unaware of the need for conservation and to reduce the consumption.
Environmentally friendly products
The companies that supply detergents and pesticides are at present not encouraged to
provide the college with environmentally products, endangering the college environment
and the health of the people who work there.
Waste
Little attention is given to ways of reducing waste and making it easier to reuse and
recycle paper, glass, aluminium, plastic and other college waste, using the most
environmentally friendly means. This indicates a lack of responsibility in such matters and
compares unfavourably with other colleges we know.
Committee Recommendation
We propose that a group of environmental consultants is brought into the college to
examine what we do and suggest ways in which we can make college members aware
of environmental issues and encourage them to get involved. Some of us have had
personal experience of the consultants Johnson and Co; and we believe they would be a
suitable choice. We urge the college to take this matter forward as a matter of urgency.
