Futbol and Football
Soccer and football have similarities other than the name which is soccer also
called football in other countries, but because football takes its name from the football being a
foot long that is why soccer is called soccer instead of football. Football the most watched sport
in America. Soccer most watched sport in the world. Soccer and football are very similar for
example like amount of players in the field at once. Footballs the rule is one team has
possession of the football trying to advance the ball down the field-by running with the ball or
throwing it .The offense score points by crossing the goal line and getting into an area called the
end zone. Both offense and defense have eleven players on the field. In soccer the rule is each
team has eleven players at once on the field at one time, but in soccer its constantly changing
from defense to offense back to defense when a player loses possession of the ball. The
objective to scoring is when the score goes over the goal line inside the goal box. Soccer and
football have on special event that every player wants to be a; part of one time their professional
career.
Which leads to their structure of championship set up. Football major sporting event is
the Super Bowl. Since 2002 the NFL has thirty-two teams, changing the division structure from
three divisions in each conference to four divisions in each conference. Each team who wins
their division becomes division champion and gets a playoff bid, each conference has three to
two number of teams that dont win their division, but has a better record than the other teams in

their conference also get a playoff spot. They are called wild card team. The two conferences,
The AFC and NFC champions then compete in the Super Bowl to determine the league
champion. (Wikipedia) For soccer it is The FIFA World Cup. The current final tournament has
been used features 32 national teams competing over the course of a month in the host nation.
There are two stages: the group stage followed by the knockout stage. In the group stage, teams
compete within eight groups of four teams each. The knockout stage is a single-elimination
tournament in which teams play each other in one-off matches, it starts with the round of 16 in
which the first place of each group plays against the second place of another group. This is
followed by the quarter-finals, the semi-finals, the third-place match (contested by the losing
semi-finalists), and then the final. (Wikipedia) 114.4 million viewers watched Super Bowl XLIX,
which is easily overshadow by the World Cup 715.1 million people. Which makes The FIFA
World Cup is the world's most widely viewed sporting event. Even in a smaller scale to soccer
second biggest tournament is The UEFA Championship League is an annual trophy like the
Super bowl, but draws over 360 million television viewers which doubles what the Super bowl
has.
Soccer easily beats football and viewers because it is international. Football is only
played in America. Which leads to the NFL trying to have more viewers international by sending
teams to England to play a game of football. England is just a starting point for the NFL pursuit
of international growth. Also the NFL have now live broadcasting in Spanish which opens the
door for Central and South America countries to tune in. Soccer is the fifth Most Popular Sport
in America according to Sportology Soccer is trying to have more publicity in United States by
expanding the MLS from nineteen teams to twenty-one starting late this year as well planned to
reach a total of twenty-four teams by the year 2020. Top European soccer clubs are trying to a

bigger impact on United States soil by having more tour during the summer in the United as
well as building youth academies to be able to work with young American players year-round.
Manchester City teamed up with the New York Yankees to build a soccer team in the United
States called New York FC which will join the MLS this year, playing in the Yankees Stadium.
Soccer is also wanting more American viewers by buying high quality players to play in the
MLS to attract the viewers attention.
Why is the NFL trying to have more viewers internationally? Why is soccer trying to
have more viewers in the United States? It all comes to making a lot more money if more people
watch the sports. The National Football League hopes to achieve $25 billion in annual revenue
by 2027, up from about $10 billion now. The Premier League's new broadcasting deal, which
works out to 1.7 billion pounds ($2.6 billion) per season, made it the second-most lucrative
sports league in the world behind the NFL, which generates a staggering 4.5 billion pounds ($7
billion) per season. (ESPN). If the Premier League's broadcasting deal goes domestic and
overseas. The broadcastings combine value deal could be worth somewhere around a
mouthwatering 9-10 billion pounds ($13-15 billion).
The new broadcasting deals for both organizations will just increase the clubs teams
money revenue. According to Forbes the top wealthiest teams in the world in the top ten are four
soccer teams as well as four football team making the top ten, but in players respectively theres
two soccer players compare to one football player making the Forbes list.
But how does the athletes compare in the social media where most of the fans interact.
According to a new eMarketer report, Worldwide Social Network Users: 2013 Forecast and
Comparative Estimates, nearly one in four people worldwide will use social networks in 2013.
The number of social network users around the world will rise from 1.47 billion in 2012 to 1.73

billion this year, an 18% increase (Emarketer). According to Sport ology the top ten athletes in
the social world is dominated by having seven players making the top ten list. First place
Cristiano Ronaldo has online fan base of 140.5 million. Cristiano Ronaldo is the first athlete to
reach 100 million Facebook likes. Why am I talking about players? Well for Cristiano Ronaldo
having the most fan based in social media world means more fans are willing to buy the jerseys
of their idol in the sports world. Cristiano Ronaldo has the bestselling jersey in soccer which he
is link with Real Madrid who sells and annual of 1.4 million jersey annually.
Soccer and Football their massive similarities all come down to the business aspect. They are
both are in the sport entertainment business that means the more viewer they get the more money
the sport gets. For example the fantasy football industry amounts to at anywhere from $40
something-billion to over $70 billion per year in tangible and intangible activity. Soccer gets
about 3.5 billion estimated fans compared to Football who has an estimated 400 million fans.
Football makes a lot of more money than soccer despite the fans ratio is about a nine times as
less than soccer. That is why soccer is pushing their business into the American market while
Football is pushing towards the international market. Can we see in the future the Super Bowl
being the most watched sporting event or we going to see the MLS final the most watched event
in America? Time changes like how the World Series was the event to watch in America now its
the Super Bowl, but only time will tell.
