Lesson Title: Sound and hearing

Application Notes:
These two activities are designed to support pupils
during their work on the QCA SOW on Sound and
hearing (2c).
The application consists of a sound identification
activity and a sorting of musical instruments by how
the sound is made activity. Where appropriate
feedback is given to pupils selections.

Class:

Subject: Science

Pupils use a sound and picture bank to consolidate scientific vocabulary and develop listening skills.
Supports work in Year 1.
Why ICT is appropriate: Allows open exploration and supports pupils to work more independently.
Resources Required: Plant part files and Multimedia PC. Headphones could be useful!
Pre-requisite knowledge/skills/understanding: Basic mouse control skills, word recognition skills and
understanding of vocabulary used.

Introduction: Show the children how the sound


activities work. Start to identify and label the sounds.
Look at the instruments screen and listen to the
sounds of the instruments. Have some real
instruments available and get the children to make
sounds by banging, blowing, plucking and shaking as
appropriate. Show how the instruments can be
classified using the diagram.

Independent Work:
Ask children to continue to label all the sounds and
work through the sorting activity.
Plenary: Discuss progress made and consolidate
learning by working through one of the activities.

The teacher checks the childrens understanding by


asking questions e.g. How do we make a sound using
a chime bar.

Assessment Strategy:
Mainly through discussion and questioning a printout of the pupils sorting work can be kept as a record of
achievement.
