Lesson Duration: 60 minutes

Subject: 1st grade ESL

Standard Curriculum: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.2

Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the
topic, and provide some sense of closure.

ISTE Standards for Students: Creative and innovation: Students demonstrate creative
thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.
Student Standard: I can write about the Pledge of Allegiance.
Objective: Given an informational text about the Pledge of Allegiance, students will write a five
sentence paragraph about what the pledge of allegiance means to them.
Problem statement: On November 11th, our school will be celebrating Veterans day. There
are many activities that are scheduled around the school. Ms. Browns ESL class has been
picked to write five sentence paragraphs to soldiers around the world. We have to tell them what
the Pledge of Allegiance means to us. But, we do not know what the words to the Pledge of
Allegiance and what they mean. The best class performance gets a pizza party from the United
States Air Force. So, we better get to work!
Lesson statement:
Pre- Assessment: Many of my students are from other countries besides America. I will put in a
request to have two fifth graders to say the Pledge of Allegiance during the morning
announcements. I will have copies of the Pledge of Allegiance on their desks when they come to
my ESL class.
Formative Assessment: I will model how to stand, place my right hand over my heart, face the
flag, and recite the pledge. Then, we will perform the Pledge of Allegiance again.
Summative Assessment: Students will write an informative paragraph about the Pledge of
Allegiance. Students will make a visual aid that helps first graders understand the Pledge of
Allegiance and illustrates why it is important to know as citizens of the United States of
America.
Student Product Description: Students will generate a paragraph that has a topic sentence,
three supporting details, and a closing sentence. The student will use the internet to locate

pictures that help explain the meaning of words in the Pledge of Allegiance. Students will
include: pledge, allegiance, republic, indivisible, liberty, and justice. The students final product
show the Pledge of Allegiance title centered in the middle of the page. The students visual aid
consists of three columns and six rows. Students will need to include the following academic
words: pledge, allegiance, republic, indivisible, liberty, and justice. The three categories on the
visual aid are: The Pledge of Allegiance Phrase, Pledge of Allegiance Pictures and why this
picture was chosen.
Student assessment: Student presentations will be graded a) paragraph structure, b) visual art,
c) spelling, and d) grammar. Three levels of quality will be developing, accomplished, and
exemplary.
