Week 2

Task-Based Learning

There are five basic methods to language

learning with the communicative approach:
physical-emotional and cultural approach,
computer-assisted language learning,
simulation, etandem (interaction with a
language partner), and task-based
learning. Each method involves the learner
in different ways, but they all involve
speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
The methods that involve real-world
experiences or situations seem to be the
most useful.
Communicative language learning activities
include interactive language games,
information sharing, task-based, social
interaction, and functional communication.
Learner-Centered theories open themselves
up to the useful advantages of multimedia
and technological resources.
Language learning should involve
meaningful tasks and constant
communication, both written and verbal.

These videos will be useful especially as

we move into a more task-based
learning system with Common Core.
Knowing how to turn concepts and
knowledge into tasks is going to be a
critical skill and learning point for
teachers.

It is very important to understand how

and why students struggle. There is
more to the struggle than just the
language barrier and more than just the
front of resistance that students put up.

Dyslexia is certainly something I did not

understand before nor did I know how
prevalent it is in our schools.
The TPR strategy/theory is definitely
interesting but seems like it would only
work well with young children since thats
how they learn best. For older children, it
should maybe be used only as-needed, not
as the focal point of instruction.

I would like to see an integrated

approach where both of these learning
strategies are utilized in a developed
curriculum plan. I think both are useful
and necessary to successful language
integration and fluency.

Language and culture are some of the most

fascinating aspects of different people and
places because they develop by virtue of
being human, developing patterns, and
needing to communicate with one another.
Its incredible that we have moved so far
now that there is a language that we can
point out as a universal, or international,
language although it is somewhat
dangerous in tearing down age-old
traditions, cultures, and communication.
Diversity is more beautiful than uniformity.

Week 8

Demo of teaching a Beginner

class

Very interesting to see the progress of each

stage of learning in these videos and how
the teachers approach the different levels
of learners.

It is helpful to know that there are

resources out there that are easily
accessible today like these which lay out
the principles and techniques of language
teaching. Its like I can always look back on
a video to remember or relearn a concept
so that I can keep learning and growing as
a teacher, especially in international
settings where the internet may be the only
accessible modern development.

I never thought about having to learn the

language of math but now I see how
confusing it can be and I remember being
in Peru when I was trying to teach math. I
thought I could use basic terms, but I found
out that there are specific terms for math
references which may or may not be used
in different contexts. It makes language
learning that much more complex, that
there are multiple varieties and contexts of
speech patterns within a language.

I liked the take way value of a lesson

video because it forces a teacher to think
through the basic idea or concept that
students need to have. They may take
away a different idea or several ideas, but
we need to have in mind something
specific for them to take away. This also
helps align our goals and standards as well
as assists students in staying focused on
the intended theme or thesis of the lesson.

ESL: Speaking Real English

http://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=AsM45FkBzq8

I do not foresee myself ever teaching

English to adults but maybe that is because
I barely feel like an adult myself let alone
able to teach those who are smarter and
more experienced in life than I am.
However, from my experience of learning
different languages, it doesnt matter how
old the teacher is as long as I am
legitimately learning how to speak, read,
and write. I appreciate anyone willing to sit
down and teach me something I dont
know. It is definitely different though, as my
Spanish tutor in Peru explained, because as
adults we come with a large set of skills
and a wide base of knowledge with which
to work.
