Ukrainian Crisis

Questions: Political Cartoon #1

1. Describe the objects or people in the cartoon.
There is a train with two ends going in the opposite direction. The one going left says Europe
and the one going right says Russia. The middle says Ukraine and there are two men saying All
Aboard!! asking for people to get on the Ukraine train.
2. Describe the actions taking place in the cartoon.
There are two ends going the opposite direction because there are Pro-EU Ukrainians and ProRussia Ukrainians. The men are saying All aboard!! to show what different Ukrainians want.
3. Identify at least two techniques that the cartoonist used and explain what ideas are
conveyed through each technique.
a. I think one technique is labeling because the cartoonist labeled the trains so that
people would understand the choices that the Ukraine needs to make.
b. I think the other technique is symbolism because I think he used the double-ended
train to explain that the Ukraine is going to be pulled apart by the crisis. Also, the
man on the Europe side is a symbol of the Pro-EU Ukrainians and the man on the
Russia side is a symbol of the Pro-Russians.
4. What is the message of the cartoon?
The message of the cartoon is that different people in the Ukraine are going towards different
ways and they need to choose between being part of the EU or being part of Russia. If they
dont come to a fair decision, the Ukraine will be pulled apart by Russia and Europe.
