WALKER ACADEMY

Running Head: DISCIPLINE PLAN

Here at Walker Academy, we believe that each and every one of our students has the ability to
reach success. Through our discipline plan, based on Lee and Marlene Canters Assertive Discipline
model, students will know the expectations that are required of them and will be positively encouraged
to follow these rules and expectations. Our school is based upon RESPECT, for teachers, students,
families, and the community.

RULES
RESPECT!

Respect!
We will respect the person and property of others, including their unique strengths and
weaknesses, as well as their beliefs and opinions
Earn it!
I expect everyone to try their hardest! Homework and lessons can be difficult yet if we
try our hardest, we are capable of achieving far more than we ever thought possible!
Safety!
Remember that safety comes first. If we see anything which may harm ourselves or
others, we must bring it to the attention of the teachers and staff. Always be careful when
using scissors and other sharp materials.
Prepare!
We will be ready and eager to learn when the bell rings. Homework will be turned in
promptly and thoroughly!
Encourage!
We will encourage those around us in their work. They are also capable of succeeding.
Let them know it!
Collaborate!
We will collaborate with our peers, teachers, and staff. We will strive to learn how to
communicate appropriately and effectively in order to better work together.
Teamwork!
Remember we are all part of the same team with the same goal! We must stick together
and work to seek the purpose of education!

CONSEQUENCES

Running Head: DISCIPLINE PLAN

Disrespect - Lets be kind!

Speaking disrespectfully includes speaking rudely to a student or teacher using foul language or
mean names. Acting disrespectfully includes pushing, shoving, or bullying. No one wants to be
treated meanly, so be kind!
Cheating? - Dont be a loser; be a winner!
If you are caught cheating or copying from a friends or classmates work, your assignment will be
given a grade of zero (0)
Danger? - Safety first!
Always act with care to avoid injury to yourself and others by not handling sharp objects, not running
in the classrooms and the halls, handling lab equipment carefully, and so forth.
Unprepared? - Oh no!
Discourage? - Dont be a Debby-Downer!
Lonely? - Dont be afraid to be part of the group!
Students need to be involved in group work, so join in! If a student acts in a way that hurts the groups
then the student will receive:
Theres no I in team!
Students are to be encouraged to participate in the Advising team activities. If a student refuses to do
so, without an adequate reason relating to health or personal safety, or the student takes on a bullying
mentality in the Advising sessions, then the student will receive the following consequences:

TEAM ENCOURAGEMENT STRATEGY

Maggie Money - At the beginning of the school year students will be presented with an equal
amount of Maggie Money. Students can earn Maggie money throughout the year for good behavior but
can also lose it if their behavior is not up to par. At the end of each semester, a party will be thrown for
the entire school by Maggie Walker the founder of Walker Academy. Refreshments and games will be
included in this party. Students must pay with Maggie money to play games. Students will have the
opportunity to win prizes from these games. This strategy will encourage students to not only follow
the rules that have been implemented but also encourage them to go over and beyond the expectations
to earn more Maggie money.

TEAM PROCEDURES

Running Head: DISCIPLINE PLAN

Use of Lockers

Each student receives a locker. It is the student's duty to see that the locker is
orderly and well-maintained. If damage is retained during a student's use of the
locker, the cause must be determined and proper action (fines to the student,
detention time to repair the locker, etc.) taken to repair the locker.

Late Homework

If student turns in late homework with a doctor's or parent's note explaining

their absence from school, then the student can be given one extra day to turn in
the assignment(s). If there is no appropriate note, then the work is simply late
and receives a decrease in the grade.

Make-up Test

With the appropriate note (doctor/parent), students can make up a missed test
within 3 days of the missed test. If extenuating circumstances exist, the teacher
is encouraged to make accommodations for the student. If no note accompanies
the student's absence, then the teacher will meet with the student to ascertain
the reason for the absence and if needed, discuss the issue with the principal to
determine appropriate action

Headings for
Assignments

Must be done according to MLA style. Other formats are permissible upon
teacher instruction for a special project that requires a different structure.

Test Rules

Tests need to be announced by the teacher beforehand. Cheating and plagiarism

are not to be tolerated. If a student or students are found cheating/plagiarizing,
then the teacher must: first, report the suspected act to the principal, then meet
with the student, and last determine an appropriate release of suspicion or
discipline for the student, including failure of the test, detention, parentteacher-principal meeting, etc.

Time between classes Between the class dismissal bell and the following start-of-class bell there will
be (3, 5) minutes. Students must be in their classrooms by the tardy bell.
Teachers will stand outside their classrooms to monitor student behavior and
greet students coming in to their classrooms.
Notebooks

Students will require a 1 subject notebook for Advisee sessions, to record

announcements, assignments, ideas, etc.

Extra Credit

The provision of extra credit assignments is up to the discretion of the

individual teacher. There can be a max of four (4) assignments per students, not
to amount to more than 20 points in total.

Special help sessions If a student is deemed to require extra help, the appropriateness of assistance
from a "Peer Buddy" or private help from the teacher, teacher aide, or
counselor will be assessed and provided, on a as-needed basis
Grading policies

Teachers are able to create their own grading scale, which must be submitted to
the principal for review and approval. Teachers will provide their students with
the grading scale at the beginning of the semester

Entering the team

arena

Teachers and students alike should be prepared for the Advisee sessions, as
needed: gym clothes and shoes, notebooks and writing utensils, etc

Bathroom times:

Students are to be dismissed for the bathroom only with a bathroom pass
provided by the teacher. The student's agenda must be signed by the teacher as

Running Head: DISCIPLINE PLAN

well, to help other educators keep a check on how many times the student is
using the bathroom and if the usage must be reduced
Standards for
neatness

Locker - nothing sticking out, no damages, no paint chipping, student is able to

find his/her materials easily
Desk drawer - (if applicable) nothing sticking out, no damages, no paint
chipping, student is able to find his/her materials easily without causing a
disturbance for the class
Cubby: jackets, coats, etc. are neatly hung, all miscellaneous materials are
placed in a certain order in the tin provided

Procedures for
absentees

In order to be excused from an absence a student must provide a note from a

doctor, parent, guardian, teacher, or school authority stating the reason why the
student was absent. If no note is provided, then the student is simply given an
unexcused absence. Three unexcused absences will result in a meeting with the
homeroom/Advisee teacher to ascertain the reason for the absences, and then a
meeting with the counselor and/or principal if the problem persists. Discipline
for excessive absenteeism is to be determine by the principal and teachers at the
weekly staff meeting

Cooperative
Learning

Is to be encouraged greatly, through small groups and partner systems. Students

with special needs will be placed with one or more "Peer Buddies" who can
assist them in learning the material

Hallways

Must be clear of debris. If students materials are found they will be placed in a
lost and found box in the secretary's office.

Beginning and end of Teams will meet. Teachers must provide activities for the students, ranging
the day on the team from discussion, to physical activities, to silent reading, etc.
Announcements

Announcements will be given during the advisee session in the morning, and in
the afternoon if needed. Students who are involved in activities mentioned by
the announcements are to be encouraged to take note of the announcement in
their Advisee notebook they are to bring to the Advisee session (see above).

The Parent-Teacher Conference Format:

For parent-teacher conferences, students will be asked to complete the above form before their
parents come in to conference with the teachers. During parent conferences, teachers and parents will
meet one on one to discuss students on an individual basis. Parent conferences should last no longer
than twenty minutes, unless more time is needed, which the teacher and the parent will determine
together. Parent conferences should occur at the beginning and end of each semester, and should start
with the above form that students will complete during class time to use during the conferences as a
reference. Parents will be able to see what their child determines as their strengths and weaknesses in
each subject, and parents are able to address any concerns they may have based upon these strengths
and weaknesses. Teachers will also be able to address any concerns they may have about the student,
but not before addressing to the parents the positive aspects and strengths they witness in their child.

SCHOOL-COMMUNITY PLAN

Running Head: DISCIPLINE PLAN

The plan for this community is for the students to engage in a weekly program during both
semesters. Below is an example for the first semester. At the end of each semester, Walker Academy
will host an after-school party where we will invite members of our community to join us.

ASSERTIVE DISCIPLINE MODEL

The classroom discipline model that we at Walker Academy chose to base our team discipline
plan off of is Lee and Marlene Canters Assertive Discipline Model. The primary focus of assertive
discipline is to have a preconceived, systematic plan [that] permits a teacher to be consistent with
behavioral expectations and to apply praises and consequences to all students in a fair and reliable
manner (Malmgren, 2005, p. 36) [1] Also included in this model is the belief that both students and
teachers have rights within the classroom. Students have the right to learn in a calm and safe
environment, and teachers have the right to teach without disruptions. To incorporate this model into
our middle school we have focused on the following four components: to have clearly established
expectations that are known and understood by each student, to emphasize positive feedback for
appropriate behavior, to deal with misbehavior in a calm and firm manner, and to have in place a
hierarchy of consequences for addressing misbehavior (Charles & Senter, 2005). [2]
