Assessment Assignment #4 Fluency

3. The student read the passage at a rate of 100 words read correctly per minute. The students
accuracy was 97%. The instructional level is independent (95% or higher). The students rate
was appropriate for her grade level.
4. Using the NAEP rubric, the students prosody was scored at a 1. This was due to the excessive
speed, ignoring of punctuation, and words read with little to no expression.
5. The student seemed have read at an extremely fast speed, and often said the wrong words due
to this. In order to make the student more aware of their crazy fast speed and no expression, the
method of choral reading would be beneficial. Having the student listen to your appropriate
speed and attentiveness would help the student repeat your model. This forces them to be more
aware at the speed they are reading.
6. Cynthia is a very skilled reader. She can decode most words almost instantly and has a wide
vocabulary which she uses to her advantage in reading. Cynthia read at a rate of 100 words read
correctly per minute. Her accuracy, or percentage of words she read correct out of the total
amount, was 97%. Her instructional level is independent because she scored 95% accuracy or
higher. Her rate is appropriate for her grade level. As you can see her scores are very high and
impressive when it comes to the speed and accuracy portion of reading. There is another aspect
of reading that is called prosody. This is the combination of the variables of timing, phrasing,
emphasis, and intonation that makes a readers speech lively. Prosody can be scored using the
NAEP rubric. Based on this rubric, Cynthia scored a 1. This was due to the use of excessive
speed throughout the entire passage, ignoring punctuation and other phase boundaries, and
reading with no expression at all. In order to increase Cynthias overall reading fluency, I would
give her instruction that would work on slowing down her reading and paying closer attention to
the punctuation. I might have Cynthia read a passage that has two speakers with her friend in
order to emphasize that reading should sound as natural as speaking to a friend. I think with this
extra practice with prosody combined with her advanced rate and accuracy, she will be a very
fluent reader!
