Assessment Assignment #3: CORE Phonics Survey

4. Ryan is very skilled at basic alphabet skills, letter sounds, consonant blends with short vowels,
short vowels and digraphs, R-controlled vowels, and long vowel spellings. In these areas he
scored at least 13 out of 15 correct. Ryan had more difficulty with short vowels in CVC words,
variant vowels, low frequency vowel and consonant spellings, and multisyllabic words. In these
sections he scored 12 out of 15 or bellow, and 13 out of 24 in the multisyllabic words, where he
experienced the most difficulty. The instructor needs to review all vowel sounds, specifically
short in CVC words, variant, and low frequency. Overall the instructor should also review the
letter sound relationships in words with the student, as well as some basic phonics. It would
also be helpful to practice decoding letter sound relationships. To practice this last skill, a
helpful activity would be to give the student flashcards of all uppercase and lowercase letters,
each on a separate card. Then ask the student to match the uppercase with its lowercase. The
instructor could then tell the student the sound the letter makes, having them then repeat it. The
student could give an example of a word that starts with this letter sound. As the student
improves he could match the cards, say the sound and give a word example without the
instructors help. This was a test over phonics, once of the first tiers in the Cognitive Assessment
Model, which means it is measuring the basic phonic skills. The student was very successful
overall so I believe that it would be helpful to test his word recognition and decoding in order to
know more about his reading skills.
