Lesson Reflection #2
Dr. Casey
March 26, 2015
On Thursday March 26, 2015 I was given the opportunity to
teach a whole group literacy lesson in Mrs. Detherages first grade
class. The objective of the lesson was for students to be able to identify
the setting, problem, solution, and the characters in the story The
Paper Bag Princess. The lesson began with a discussion on the
definition of setting, problem, and solution in stories. These concepts
were written on the board, and the students were told that they
needed to listen carefully to the story so that they could find those
different elements in the story. While reading The Paper Bag Princess, I
continually asked the students questions about the book to keep them
engaged and to help generate ideas about the setting, problem, and
solution of the story. I could tell that the students were engaged
because they were able to answer the questions correctly. After the
story the students were required to fill out a worksheet and write out
the characters, the problem, setting, and solution of the story. This
worksheet would help students with their comprehension skills. As I
walked around and observed the students working, I could tell that the
objective was being met. The students were able to successfully fill out
the boxes. Some of the issues that I was having during this lesson were
that some students had a hard time figuring out what the setting was. I
knew that they had an understanding of what the definition of setting

was because they were able to tell me, but they didnt know what to
write specifically for the story. To help these students, I brought the
story over and re-read a couple of the pages to them. This instantly
helped the students and they were able to figure out the setting.
Concluding the lesson, I brought everyone back to the carpet to
discuss the worksheet. This discussion helped me realize how
successful the lesson had gone. The students really understood the
different story elements. Overall, I would say that this lesson was really
successful. The students grasped the concept of setting, problem,
solution, and character, and were able to correctly fill out the
worksheet and follow up by explaining their thought process in our
group discussion.
