Overview
Topic and Overarching Goal (what do you want the children to learn?):n
With this art project they will learn with the paint how to mix colors and what each of the colors make. When the
students are about to start mixing colors I am going to have the children make a prediction and then actually do the
experiment to see if they were correct or not. It also helps them with their fine motor skills because the students are
painting and guessing which colors mix together to make a secondary color. After they figured out which colors
mixed together ask them a review to see if they have gained knowledge on how to make these different colors.

Preparing The Activity

Observation and Assessment:
What interests, assessments, prior knowledge, observations, and/or experiences have you observed to explain
why you have chosen this activity?
In the beginning of the lab year with the Polars I noticed the students not knowing which colors mixed together
to make what. So with this project they will learn a little more and get to experiment and figure out for
themselves how to make secondary colors. It will give the students the knowledge of the difference between
primary and secondary colors.

Activity Description: What are you doing for your activity? Describe in very specific step-by-step detail, using

numbers or bullets. Include how you will get the experience started (materials, props, prep work, transitions)
and what you need to do at the end of your experience (clean-up, transitions, documentation, notations, next
learning steps). Write descriptions as if you will be giving instructions to a substitute teacher:
1. Get three paint brushes for each of the colors, red, blue and yellow.
2. Get three bowls of paint of the colors red, blue and yellow.
3. Set up each place with a piece of construction paper.
4. Explain to the children the activity and how we use primary colors to create secondary colors.
5. Ask the children what they think what colors they are going to come up with after mixing the colors
together.
6. Have the children mix the colors together.
7. Have the children observe what colors they made.
8. Explain that these colors they made are secondary colors.
9. Make them explain to me whether they were correct or incorrect.
10. Note if any of the children were correct with which colors they are going to make.
11. Write their names on their projects and take pictures of each of them.
12. Clean up the paint and clean off the paint brushes.
