Are Genders Being Equally Represented on Broadway?
Carpenter, Jordan. "Gender Representation on Broadway." Telephone
interview. 28 Apr. 2015.
This is one of the more important types of research I will be
doing. I believe that it is extremely important to find out what future
actors and actresses think about this topic. This is an interview I will do
with a friend back home who is going to college for acting in hopes of
one day being a Broadway actress herself. This will give me a point of
view from someone who will be right in the mix of gender equality
once she begins her acting career. Knowing her opinion will help me
figure out a way to either help increase gender equality or help
stabilize it. This interview will be extremely important towards my final
opinion.

"Disney THE LION KING | Official Site for the Broadway Musical | Cast &
Creative Team." Disney THE LION KING | Official Site for the
Broadway Musical | Cast & Creative Team. Web. 20 Mar. 2015.
I plan on using specifically the cast and crew page of The Lion
Kings website because it will give me an insight on how each gender is
represented within one of the most popular Broadway shows of all

time. It will allow me to understand if this musical is based more on

their female actresses or male actors. I think this is a valuable source
of research because it gives me 100% true information on whether this
popular musical is more male based or female based. It will give me an
initial idea as to what the answer to my question might be.

Gunderson, Lauren. "Women Attend More Theatre Than Men: Why Not
More Roles?" Intimate Excellent. N.p., 06 Apr. 2012. Web. 24 Apr.
2015.
This article offers a very interesting perspective to gender
equality on Broadway. It states that more females attend Broadway
musicals, but 65% of the roles are for men. So why dont more roles go
to women if more women attend the shows? This is very interesting. It
was the first time Ive actually seen a statistic that men acquire more
roles than females. This article is very important because of that
statistic. The article itself makes sense because if women are spending
their money to see these shows, then women should be more
represented in the shows.

Hodge, Jarrah. "A Feminist Guide to Broadway Musicals." Gender Focus

A Feminist Guide to Broadway Musicals Comments. N.p., 12 Nov.
2010. Web. 22 Mar. 2015.
This article got me thinking about feminine heroin characters in
musicals.
For example, Jarrah Hodge specifically lists one of the musicals as The
Sound of Music, which at its time, she states, was incredibly feminist
because the main character is a strong woman. Another musical Jarrah
Hodge lists is called The Color Purple. This article has intrigued me to
look further into that musical, because rather than just having mainly
females in the production, its main purpose is to tell the story of a
young woman who endures years of suffering but eventually finds her
voice. This article helps me because it gives me a starting point to
find other musicals to research to find more information on feminism in
Broadway productions. It is also one of the only articles that I have
found that has a feminine perspective when it comes to gender
representation on Broadway.

Lampell, Catherine. "Gender Bias in Theater." Economix Gender Bias in

Theater Comments. The New York Times, 24 June 2009. Web. 23
Mar. 2015.

This is a fantastic article. What Id like to focus on is a paragraph

within this article that talks about male and female playwrights. It
states that there was a study tested to see whether male or female
playwrights were more popular among show directors. What they
found was that, even though they were written exactly the same, if a
script had a mans name on it, it was more likely to be chosen by the
director. This is a perfect example of sexism within the theatre. This is
a great article because it shows with facts that sexism is happening in
theatre right now. It also backs up a statement made in Lauren
Gundersons article that states that less than 20% of female
playwrights are chosen for on and off-Broadway productions.

Rusie, Robert. "Talkin' Broadway - Broadway 101." Talkin' Broadway Broadway 101. N.p., n.d. Web. 16 Mar. 2015.
There is a page on this article that is specifically about the
beginning of Broadway itself and that is what I will research. I plan on
using this page to explain how Broadway began and the first plays that
were performed on Broadway. This is important to the research
because it will give myself and the reader the necessary knowledge of
Broadway in order to expand on gender equality at the beginning of
Broadway and now. I will hopefully be able compare and contrast the
gender equality of the first Broadway shows and todays shows. The
information that I will use is mainly the history of Broadway from 1810

to the early 1900s. I believe this information is relevant enough to

include in my research.

Vraketta, Georgia. "The Representations of Gender, Sexuality and Race

in Disney's The Lion King." The Representations of Gender,
Sexuality and Race in Disney's The Lion King. University of
Brighton, n.d. Web. 16 Mar. 2015.
There is a section in this article about The Lion King that is about
masculinity and feminism in The Lion King. The information from this
excerpt is mainly what Ill use from this article. This excerpt talks about
how most of the main characters in The Lion King are males, while the
secondary characters are mainly females. The great part of this article
is that it gives an opposite opinion than that of Jarrah Hodges. This
article helps balance out the question of which gender is more
represented on Broadway. I believe the information from this article will
be useful because it gives an example of a musical that is made up of
mostly male characters and gives a masculine perspective rather than
a feminine perspective. This opposite perspective is extremely
important towards my research because in the end, there will need to
be a counterclaim.
