Round Table Essay
The prolonged topic of sex and violence versus the media and its effects on young
individuals has been raising concerns and questions for quite some time. The main question to
this topic is, what ways can we prevent these issues today, so that our youth in the near future
does not have to overcome any disturbance that music and media brings? The content delivered
in media is more socially accepted in todays generation; however, it is strongly affecting the
youth of the generation as well. The development of the youth in this generation and future
generations to come will depend on parents and media to provide appropriate content for them.
The media sends the wrong message to children at such a young age and there should be more
monitoring of what is put out in the open for the children to process through their minds.

There are three noteworthy voices in this matter which are the, Social and Behavioral
Psychologist, the violent media and game user, and the Political Scientist. The voice of the
Psychologist, has a strong state and outlook that drastically changes over time. They mainly
argue upon psychological effects, possible health threats, and behavior. The other voice, the
frequent violent media and game user, lacks knowledge of the possible effects, and overlooks the
negative outcomes by feeling that they are completely fine, because they consider the issue as
their form of entertainment. The third voice, the Political Scientist, have done their best to bring
in ways to understand what kind of culture is being brought to young individuals from the media

world. Although, there are many supporting voices within this concerning issue, these three shed
the most light on their main point of view.

The Social and Behavioral Psychologist, considered the most educated voice in this topic,
state their viewpoint on the psychological and behavioral effects young individuals are exposed
to within sex and media violence; children may become less sensitive to the pain and suffering of
others. They may be more fearful of the world around them. Children have a high chance of
becoming more than likely to behave in aggressive or harmful ways towards others. However,
Social and Behavioral Psychologists have used many experimental methods and designs that
have proved that violent media and game use pose a public health threat to children. These
Psychologists serve as proponents who argue that risky behavior by children and young adults
can include violence against others, along with a lack of remorse for possible consequences. The
type of faulty thinking creates stressors in children which can lead to an onset of various
symptoms.
The most relevant point of view, the violent media and video game user, argues that
media and violent games have little or no effect on what they do in daily life. They argue that
content they are exposed to is a positive form of entertainment to them. They feel that they hold
the stronger argument, because they feel that they have full control of their actions regardless of
what they choose to view.
However, one side does not show any effects from the violent content that they
display, and the other side, in contrast, shows negative behavioral effects with a lack of
notice, because they feel that it is okay. These media and game users also point out the fact that
many mass murderers most likely did not use any violent media or game usage. Violent media

and video game users will continue to feel that this type of usage is appropriate for themselves
regardless of what reality tries to set for them.

The most thunderous voice in this topic, as known as the Political Scientist, argues that
violence permeates the media. Political Scientists also hold a high standpoint within the
argument. They are fully aware of what the youth is being exposed to. These
scientists have been following up on the news about the violent effects the media exposes.
Political Scientists speak upon America leading the highest rates of murder, violent
crime, juvenile crime, imprisonment, etc. They also helped fuel up programs and associations to
influence the fact that media and televised violence teaches aggressive attitudes and behaviors.
They have been making several efforts with opposing this issue to the world for decades.
Politicians feel that they have accomplished as a whole, but there are still improvements to be
made. Now this day, politicians are working amongst many Psychologists, social workers,
associations, and committees because of the tragic leading issues occurring today in America.
Sex and violence on media is a growing issue in America. With that being said, there are
several aspects and opinions voiced in this topic. With the Social and Behavioral Psychologist,
violent media and game user, and Social Scientists, who are considered the most noteworthy in
this matter, they helped back up an average individuals point of view and opinions. These three
strong voices helped society become more of a known matter. Sex and violence on the media
is becoming more effective than the start as the years pass by. The violent media and game
user may share a whole different viewpoint than the Social and Behavioral Psychologist and
the Political Scientists, but they all help support the argument as a whole. However, these three
prominent voices change over time.

Social and Behavioral Psychologists and Political Scientists hold views that are more
alike. They both argue that the youth in society is at risk when displaying disruptive content.
However, the viewpoints of three change over time, and have conflicting viewpoints than those
from different time periods. All three of these voices relate to each other as well, because they all
are affected by this issue. These three prominent voices bring consideration to the issue, and are
in the process of making a change within society.
