Social Media in the Classroom

In todays society, social media is used for absolutely everything. We use it to stay
connected to loved ones, gain information, and to become more aware of the world around us.
Social media is extremely helpful in many different ways. As the platform of social media
continues to increase, its usefulness does as well. It now has the ability to become useful to
world of education. Social media can offer larger platforms for learning and create connections
that are beneficial for education and also help with the process of learning.
Social media opens doors for education that were not always available. It does this by
offering higher platforms for education and also expanding opportunities for better connections.
For example in the past people did not have the technology to share information with different
people. If they wanted to learn information from others they had to wait for months for it to
come. Matthew Graham, author of Social Media as a Tool for Increased Student Participation
and Engagement outside the Classroom in Higher Education, agrees that social media such as
Facebook and Twitter have enormous potential for teaching and learning in Higher
Education, with their core function premised on connecting groups of people worldwide and
encouraging them to create and share information (p.17). Social media has the ability to connect
people from around the world. It then allows them to share their knowledge and gives people the
chance to learn from other people.
Social media also has the ability to help with the process of learning in the classroom. All
students do not learn the same way and have different learning processes. Social media such as
YouTube, where people can share different videos on varies topics, allows people to gain
information from other sources. If students have trouble with learning from their teachers
prospective, they can then turn to social media and gain a whole new perspective on the topic.

Social Media in the Classroom

Social media networks is there provide students with the opportunities and the power to create,
collaborate and share ideas and information (Graham, 2014, p. 16).
While social media can be used for a variety of things, good and bad, there is no denying
that it can be truly beneficial to students in school. Social media gives students the chance to
experience things that people in the past never imagined could take place. By placing the use of
social media into education, we increase the platform of education as well as the connections that
can be made. It also aids students in the learning process of education. Student have the
opportunities to gain so much more knowledge with social media than without it.
