E portfolio Reflection
The E portfolio that I have created has several different artifacts that fall under the
DESERT model. The artifacts are works that I have completed while going through the
Elementary Education Program at Dixie State University. The artifacts demonstrate my abilities
as a caring, competent, and qualified elementary educator.
A caring teacher has the ability to address the diversity within the classroom, reflect upon
teaching to work for improvements, and to maintain a positive teaching disposition. Through the
Comprehension Lesson artifact under the Effective Pedegogy tab, I was able to address the
diversity of the students in my practicum class through a literacy lesson. Diversity is not limited
to language, race, and ethnicity. For this assignment, I differentiated for five different students
with different needs. The needs of these students included: higher level questioning, modified
texts for diverse reading levels, pre-teaching certain content for students who did not speak
English as their first language, and placing students in certain areas of the room so that they
could work with limited distractions. Differentiation and many other things that are planned in
lessons are not always carried out in every lesson. This is why reflection is so important. Having
the ability to reflect and work toward a better classroom is another crucial aspect of a caring
teacher. I have indicated my understanding of reflection in my math analysis video reflection. In
this artifact, I had to watch myself teach on video and reflect upon the things that I did well and
the things that I could improve on. This artifact was eye opening and powerful for me to watch. I
was able to see many things about myself that I had not seen before.

A caring teacher is always working to build relationships with parents. This is part of
teaching disposition which another tab that contains the artifact of the classroom website. The
classroom website was created to be used in my future classroom. With technology advancing,
this is one great way to make the connection from home to school. This is something that I will
maintain and use in my classroom because parents should feel connected and be able to have
access to their students education and be informed about what is going on in the classroom.
Putting together the class website gave me a start on this and made an awareness of the
importance in teaching disposition.
A competent teacher possesses characteristics and skills in classroom management and
content knowledge. When a teacher is able to take control and lead the class with the knowledge
that he/ she has, the students will learn and grow. The artifact in my e portfolio that shows my
classroom management is my classroom management plan that contains: my management
philosophy, classroom procedures, and a behavior case study. This artifact is found under the
Environment tab of the DESERT model. This artifact was designed for my future classroom with
help from my practicum experience. Some of the ideas came from the practicum class that I
worked in that semester. I also conducted the behavior case study while working in a practicum
classroom with a real student. Content knowledge is another important aspect of a competent
teacher. The artifact that showcases my content knowledge are the science lesson that I have
written and the history production that I have created. These artifacts are found under the
Subject Matter tab. Both of the artifacts show that I have knowledge not only in these subject
areas but in technology as well. The science lesson was written with the content and research as
well as the technology embedded within it. The history production is a finished product of long
research that was displayed utilizing technology. This assignment prepared me to learn and use a

type of technology that I had never used before (Movie Maker). Besides the technology
component of this project, I learned how to find reliable sources for research. This will help me
when I am preparing for classroom lessons, along with teaching research skills to my students.
A qualified teacher has the ability to put classroom management, content, and diversity
all together. This is evident for me through my SIOP Evaluation Form. This form along with my
lesson is found under the Diversity tab in my e portfolio. When demonstrating SIOP in a lesson,
it is important to incorporate the classroom management, the content that you are teaching, all
while you are meeting the needs of all of your diverse students. I have been observed by
professors and peers. On the SIOP evaluation forms, they have given me feedback and graded
me based upon me addressing diversity, classroom management, and whether the students
learned the content. These forms will show my performance in these areas.
The e portfolio that I have created is filled with artifacts that confirm the skills that I have
acquired throughout my time in the Elementary Education Program. Through completing my
classroom management plan, comprehension lesson, classroom website, science lesson, history
production, and my SIOP evaluations, I feel that I am ready to put these skills into my own
practice.
