Nightbook: Theme and Variation/Rondo Form. Builds on themes
and almost always returns to the original theme.
0:00-0:06 Introduction to piano, cello, and shakers. Consistent
4/4 time.
0:07-0:29 Motif A: small range of four notes repeatedly played.
Conjunct melody and arch contour. Cello and shakers keep
beat. Motif played 9 times.
0:30- 1:01 Theme A: introduces main melody. Ascending
contour. Wider range and more counterpoint, and creates
dissonance. Cello holds notes as it plays down scale.
1:02-1:30 A variation has greater tension. Piano and cello echo
each other like a round. Shakers drive the tempo.
1:31- 1:46 Shakers joined by snare drum, which makes the
tempo feel faster. Repeats A variation.

1:47-2:02 Variation A: repeated with snare drum. Echo now


done by violin, with the same melody, an octave higher.
2:03- 2:34 A variation: repeats with cello as echo.
2:35- 3:00 Theme B: only the piano and violin play. Play
same melody at octaves. Slower tempo and softer volume.
Melody is major.
3:01- 3:36 Variation on Theme B: Viola or violin play
harmony. No counterpoint. Marimba accentuates second and
fourth beats.
3:37-4:06 A variation: minor mode return. Shakers drive
tempo. Piano and violin echo, volume begins to grow, and
counterpoint returns.

4:07-4:37 Original Theme A: repeated with snare drum.


Near the end changes from minor to major again.
4:38-5:09 Theme C introduced in a major key. Dissonant
melody and large range. Repeated twice.
5:10-5:50 Theme C now reverts back to theme B, still in
major. Only the piano and snare drum. Theme B repeats
three times.
