Standard 1.b. Language Acquisition and Development

The artifact I choose to represent my accomplishment of standard 1.b language
acquisition and development is from my research-based paper on How do home and
community factors affect children acquiring a second language? This was my final
assignment from my ESC760-Language Acquisition class.
I strongly believe that this assignment best represents standard 1b because it
clearly demonstrate that I understand and apply theories and research in second
language acquisition and development to support my ELLs social and academic
English language.
With this assignment being a research-based paper, I had to compose a topic of
my choice that related to acquiring a new language and collect research to try and find an
answer to my question.
After completing this research paper I learned that when acquiring a new
language, welcoming different languages into your classrooms; keeping parents in the
loop; and talking to your students are all very important approaches to help your students
acquire a new language.
This artifact impacted my understanding of acquiring a new language because
before gathering research for this artifact I was not aware that literacy skills in your
native language transferred over to the new language. This artifact also allowed me to
reflect on my own language acquisition experience and how it aligned to the research
findings.
This artifact will greatly influence my ESL students because I plan on using the
strategies Ive learned to help ease my students language acquisition process. The

parents of my ESL student can also benefit from the research found in this artifact
because the research presented a lot of strategies and approaches they too can use to
better assist their childs in their new language acquisition process. Parents can put in
place routines at home that mirror routines in the classroom. They can also reach out to
the school to receive training in helping their child with schoolwork. The most important
one is in my opinion is also the easiest; making sure constantly talk and read with your
child. The reason I say easiest is because this could be done in whichever language the
parent feels confortable in.
A few of the areas in which I would like to improve in is making sure that my
students parents have all the support they need to help their child. Maybe having a
meeting with my students parents once a month to keep them in the loop of the unit
were in, what their child is learning, and most importantly how they can help their child
in to be successful in that unit.
