Lesson Title: The Indian Emergency

Grade Level: 7th grade
Date: 5/5/2015
COE Course: EDUC 3403

Standard(s) and Objective(s)

Standard:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RH.6-8.6
Identify aspects of a text that reveal an author's point of view or
purpose (e.g., loaded language, inclusion or avoidance of particular
facts).
Objective: As a result of this lesson, students will be able to gain an
understanding as to why Pi and his family potentially fled to Canada.

II.

Assessment
Pre-assessment: An exit slip will be issued a few days prior to this
lesson. This exit slip will include four vocabulary words. Students will
be asked to research the definition of these words to gain a better
understanding of their meaning. The exit slips will be taken up at the
beginning of this lesson to determine if the students have attained the
knowledge needed to learn about the Indian Emergency.
Post-assessment: Students will be asked to write a short essay about
the Indian Emergency and determine if Pis family made the right
decision to flee from India.

III.

Planning
I researched the CCSS based on geography, social studies, and
history and found a standard that meets the criteria of this lesson. I
researched the Indian Emergency and found a newspaper article from
the Indian Herald in June of 1975. I also created a Prezi to assist in
my lecture about the Indian Emergency.

IV.

Engaging the Learner

The Prezi presentation will be used to gain the students interest.

During this time, students will be allowed to take notes. I will also have
students read Chapter 29 aloud.
V.

Methods, Activities, and Resources

Methods: We will discuss the exit slips to make sure the students have
an understanding of the vocabulary that will be presented in the
lesson.
Activities: Students will be given the opportunity to discuss the Indian
Emergency in a group setting. Students will determine if this was why
the Patels fled India and see if their classmates agree or disagree.
This will also help students better understand this time in India, which
will benefit them when writing their essay.

VI.

Potential Adaptations to the Lesson (PAL)

Accommodations will be made for students that have IEPs. Students
with physical needs will be seated for optimal success based on their
individual needs. ELLs will be given extra time to read and will also
have the opportunity to work closely with their classmates.

VII.

Collaboration
I will meet with others that are familiar with the Indian Emergency and
learn how to improve the lesson. I will also research ways to continue
to continue to incorporate history into Life of Pi.
