Read Poem Afternoon On A Hill by Edna Millay
Provide a description of how you will teach the whole word and the phonics
skill during your lesson.
I will teach the whole word to students by first introducing the word to the students.
Next, I will pronounce the word to the student. I will use the word in written context that
is familiar to the student. Then, ask the student to use the word in a sentence and write
it on the board. I will present the word again and ask everyone to pronounce it.
Provide a description of your activity one for whole word and one for phonics
skill (essentially your explanation to the students).
The activity for the whole word is that I will have students pair in twos to work with a
peer in making sight words such as the, to, and, at using a baking sheet and magnetic
letters. Each student will take turns forming words while the other reads/sounds out the
word. They are to create as many words together. The activity for phonics skills will be
as group/class to have the class participate in a skill building game. I will write the
sound of "ow" on the board and ask the class to think of words and I will write words as
well onto the board with "ow". Students will sound out the words together aloud.

Provide a rationale as to why you chose the whole word and the phonics skill
words. These must be two different words within your poem.
I chose the word and as a whole word because it is a commonly used word in literature.
It can be used in many forms in reading and writing. It is used as a conjunction to join
together words. I chose the sound ow for the phonics skill word because it was used in
the poem and it can mistakenly be mispronounced if reading the context wrong.
Provide a rationale as to why you selected the poem for your lesson.
I selected the poem Afternoon On A Hill because it is a fairly short poem that is about
enjoying a day of relaxing and enjoying the pleasures of nature without any care. It is
about how one can be happy with the simplest things in life and I thought it would be a
positive poem to portray to students about enjoying life.
Reflect on the experience of building a lesson using poems and how you can see
using poems as beneficial to teaching students.
I can see using poems are beneficial to teaching students because of the content of
explaining a story without long sentences and paragraphs. A story can be told within a
few lines and I think poems give very descriptive and detailed meanings that adds vivid
visuals for the reader.
