Homeostatic Cellular

Process Diseases
Are you at risk?
By Kay Atkins, Makayla Boyd, Jessi Weems

Driving Question
How do the cellular processes that maintain
homeostasis function or fail to sustain
equilibrium within the cell? How does a lack of
cellular homeostasis contribute to causing
diseases?

VOCAB
Homeostasis- The ability of an organism to
maintain a stable equilibrium of the body and
internal organs
Protein synthesis- The production of amino
acids in the ribosomes that created proteins.

Coronary Heart Disease (Diffusion)

Most common type of heart disease.
Leading cause of death in men and women
Symptoms include angina,fatigue, and
shortness of breath
Plaque build up is the main cause of coronary
heart disease
Prevent it by not eating too much fatty foods
Cure it maybe by inventing a pill that could
unclog the arteries without going into shock
using good cholesterol.

Coronary Heart Disease (Cont.)

Breast Cancer (Protein Synthesis)

1 out 7 women will be diagnosed

with Breast Cancer. 2 out 3 people
are diagnosed with Breast Cancer.1
out of 1,000 men will be diagnosed
with Breast Cancer.

Cancer of the breast, is cancer that

starts in the tissue of the breast.

Breast cancer is second only to lung

cancer as a cause of deaths in
American women.
Breast Cancer is not inherited
through genes but, class shas it
was.

Cancer is caused when there is

overproduced division of
abnormal cells in your body.
Cell cycling and protein
synthesis, both are key
physiological tasks for cancer
cells.

How it is Caused?
Many disease states arise when
dysregulation of protein synthesis occurs.
mRNA and the DNA get mutated. The mRNA
sends unwanted protein signals.
Viruses replaces the DNA.
DNA to much sugar, alcohol and fats.

Signs of Breast Cancer

Cures/ Preventions
Have annual mammogram.(X-rays use to examine the
human breast)
(1)Dont use tobacco.(2)Have healthy weight and be
physically active.(3)Eat healthy lots of fruits and
vegetables.
Breast Cancer is highly treatable. Some possible Cures(1)block the tumor off from oxygen. Surround it.
(2)Inject White blood cells into your body, so they can
kill the cancer cells.(3) Have tumor surgical removal if
possible.

Diabetes (Energy Conversion)

A metabolism disorder
Metabolism- how the body uses and digests food for energy
Eat glucose bloodstream energy for cells/pancreas releases
insulin to transport glucose to cells lower blood sugar
In diabetes- glucose from bloodstream does not enter cells, causing
glucose levels to rise, causing hyperglycemia (too much sugar)
Type 2, your pancreas produces too much insulin and your cells dont
get enough sugar to go through homeostasis
Insulin- hormone produced in the pancreas regulating the amount of
glucose in cells
Basically, the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin; the cells have
too much sugar in them-which is dangerous to the body.

Causes/Effects
Causes
Immune system destroys insulin producing
cells in pancreas
Can happen at any age; common in children
Can be hereditary
Eating too much sugar/not exercising enough
Environment
Effects
Kidney failure
Blurred Vision
Risk of stroke
Heart Disease
Neuropathy
Checking blood sugar/insulin shots
Medication
Carb intake

Possible Cures/Preventions
There is no set cure for diabetes. Some possible cures are Medical professionals find a way to make a new pancreas
Replacement of insulin production cells
Making a shot to take every once in a while that controls insulin levels
for long periods of time
Preventions
Eat healthier
Get more exercise
Watch carb intake
Drink diet sodas/Sugar Free
If you know you are at risk, check your blood sugar

Conclusion
In conclusion, we found that many diseases are
more than they seem. They are affiliated with
homeostatic processes, and affect how a person
lives. Though some may not be cured, there are
ways to prevent them. And maybe in the future these
possible solutions could cure them.
