PRACTICE SET: RHEOLOGY

1. If a Newtonian oil has a viscosity 400 cp, what stress will produce a rate of shear of 75/s?
2. What is the shear rate when an oil is rubbed into the skin with a relative rate of motion between
the fingers and the skin of about 10.0 cm/s and the film thickness is about 0.200 mm?
3. A. Using an Ostwald viscometer, acetone was measured and found to have a viscosity of 0.313 cp
at 25C. Its density is 0.788 g/mL, what is the kinematic viscosity of acetone?
B. Water is used as the standard, its viscosity at 25C is 8.90 x 10-3 p, what is the viscosity of
acetone relative to water?
4. When immersed in a Newtonian liquid of viscosity 200.0 p, a bob rotated at 400.0 rpm with a
weight of 1600.0 g. What is the instrumental constant?
5. The following data were obtained at 25C for a plastic system by means of a cup and bob
viscometer. Calculate the yield value and the plastic viscosity of the material.

6. With a stress of 850.0 dynes/cm2, material A produces a shear rate of 38.0 s-1 and 42.0 s-1 for
material B. If the yield value for material A is 92.0 dynes/cm2, which of the two is less viscous?
7. Using an Ostwald viscometer at 20C, the time of flow of water through the apparatus is 4.95 min.
When the instrument was dried and filled with Carbon disulfide, the time of flow was 85 s. At 20C,
the density of water is 0.9982 and that of CS2 is 1.2632 g/mL while the viscosity of water is 1.002 cp.
Compute for the absolute and relative viscosity of Carbon disulfide.
8. With a weight of 1200.0 g, a bob rotated at 70.0 revolutions/20.0 seconds when immersed in
castor oil and at 80.0 revolutions/25.0 seconds when in white petrolatum. If the viscosity of castor oil
is 120.0 p and that of white petrolatum is 85.2 p, what force must be applied to the white petrolatum
so that it will flow? (Hint: solve for Kv based on castor oil)
