Lesson Plan Format

Class: Year 3

Date: 07.05.13

Key Learning Area: Mathematics

Lesson Topic: 3D shapes

Time: 55min

Recent Prior Experience (specific relevant concepts, skills and values the school students have experienced prior to this lesson): Ss have looked at 3D
shapes. Ss know terms faces, edges and vertex. Previous lesson was classifying shapes into categories (prisms, pyramids, cones etc.). Ss are familiar with
NETs
Syllabus Outcome(s):
One or two only. Please note the syllabus
reference number AND write out in full.

Indicators of Learning for this lesson:

Behaviours that contribute toward achievement of outcome(s).
Quote syllabus numbers. Must be clear, specific, observable.
Curriculum Content Strands may be used as headings.

SGS2.1
Makes, compares, describes and names
By the end of this lesson, the students will:
three-dimensional objects including
- comparing and describing features of prisms, pyramids,
pyramids, and represents them in drawings
cylinders, cones and spheres (SGS2.1)
- identifying and naming three-dimensional objects as prisms,
pyramids, cylinders, cones and spheres (SGS2.1)
- explore, make and describe the variety of nets that can be
used to create particular three-dimensional objects
(SGS2.1)
Any safety issues to be considered:

learners attainment of learning outcomes.
Should be linked to each learning indicator.

INTRODUCTION
- Warm-up Counting with Bead Strings

Ss should be using strategies, such

as friends of 10
Patterns: 11, 15, 19, 23, 27, 31, 35,
39, 43

Familiarising Ss with terms, e.g.

faces, edges, prisms, pyramids (etc.)

Our learning Intention: We are

learning to make, identify, and
categories 3D shapes using NETs
I can:

what students (Ss) will do.

Bead String

T will get Ss to re-iterate how many beads are on the

string and in each colour
T will get S to count from 7 going up by 4
T will get S to count down by 4
T will asks S if they can see a pattern

T will then introduce S to the next part of the lesson

T introduces the learning intention and Success Criteria IWB

on the IWB
T will go over the features of a 3D shape

DEVELOPMENT

T will quickly look at the decade with S as a warm-up

T asks S to give example of 3D shapes. T prompt

students with a cube
T will show S some example of 3D shapes, including a
cube, rectangular prism, sphere, cylinder, and cone.
T will display these example on the board
T exam plains why these are all 3 dimensional shapes
T will explain to S that when looking at 3D shapes there
are 3 concepts they need to know: Vertices, edges and
faces
T will demonstrate these on the board using a diagram
T looks at these in regards to the other shapes displayed
on the board

Making of NETs

NOTE: Ss do not stick the flaps of the NETs

together, so that it lays flat when Ss stick one 20min
face into their books.

Identifying edges, faces and Vertex

Classifying their 3D shape.

Documenting how they got that (e.g.
Base of the shape determines)
CLOSURE
- Reflection

-

T will introduce the next part of the lesson, looking at Net

T explains to Ss that they will need to cut along the NETs

edges and join there shapes

From the shape Ss identify features

T will reflect on the lesson and ask question like:

I can:

Make 3D shapes using a10 min
