Preface:AboutthisUnit

ThisunitwascreatedusingUbDconceptsandframework.Istartedtocreatethis
unitbydefiningtheobjectivesandthencreatingtasksthatsupportedmystudentsby
allowingthemtoexploreandsharetheirfundsofknowledge.Myunitwascompletely
studentcentered.Ichangedmypreplannedinstructionalmosteverydaybasedonmy
studentsquestions,comments,andfeedback.Themisconceptionsactivityinweektwo
wasbasedsolelyonmystudentsmisconceptionsfromweekone.These
misconceptionscamefromdailychecksforunderstandingsuchasexitslips,donows,
andtalktoyourneighborgroupdiscussions.
Myunitplanworksasastaircase,eachweekbuildsoffthelastinordertoget
mystudentstothefinallearningtarget.Inthisunitthelearningtargetwasthe
culminatinggroupactivityinwhichmystudentsbecomeepidemiologistsinorderto
solvearealworldoutbreak.Themainteachinggoaloftheunit,forme,becamethat
studentslearnedabouthowinfectiousdiseasesareaffectingtherealworldandhow
infectiousdiseaseslikeebola,themeasles,malaria,andsmallpoxaffectrealpeople.I
wantedmystudentstowalkawayfromthisunitwithclarifiedmisconceptionsabout
infectiousdiseases,butmoreimportantlyIwantedmystudentstohave
confidence
and
knowthattheycouldbecomeepidemiologistsintheirfuture.
