Media

Introduction

Hello, today our group, which includes Briana, Haya, Lexi, Zixuan and myself,
are going to present how social networking can complicate life. As we progress
into our Power Point we are going to demonstrate our argument, that social
networking does complicate multiple aspects of life, facts supporting our
statements and above all a thorough analysis on the topic we have researched.
First we are going to have our fact collectors, Haya and Zixuan, present their
findings which are going to emphasize on communication, health, and
education. Then afterwards our media presenters, Briana and Lexi, are going to
show you some clips, pictures, and etc. to support the facts we have already
stated.

Communication
A study by Dr. Rauch and colleagues, the team found that social
interaction on social media sites, specifically Facebook, might have a
negative impact on face-to-face meetings for individuals who already
have high ranks of anxiety.
According to Enough is Enough (EIE) - an organization that aims to make
Internet use safer for children and families - 95% of young adults who
used social media have perceived forms of cyberbullying on social
networking sites and 33% have been victims of cyber bullying.

Health
People who have less social confidence can easily see themselves as
having less worth than others.
Being constantly reminded that your life may not measure up to so many
others can further lower a persons self-confidence.
In addition, social media is rampant with overly critical and often hurtful
interaction. These unfriendly exchanges can take place so much more
easily when the human element of face-to-face communication has been
removed.
Such cruelty can be devastating to an already troubled individual. The feelings
of inadequacy that are caused can sometimes lead to depression.

Family
When our Family members are being together and having dinner, some
people are on their phones rather than fully interacting with others.
Mobile phones can damage family relationships merely by their presence
even when not in use, according to new research of Andrew Przybylski and
his colleagues at Essex University .
Researchers state that mobiles can have negative effects on closeness,
connection, and conversation quality

Education
Using social media for educational purpose could help and cut out a lot of charges on
countries especially developing countries. However, social media can affect education
progress negatively, by isolating the student in classrooms. A student named Willman
openly admit that social media is a distraction. They ignore instructions and lessons to
sneak glances at their phones throughout the school day, and at night its a simple tool
for procrastination and putting a lot of tasks for the last minutes.

Expression
Social network conveys Inauthentic Expression of Feelings
Social networking Apps today are filled with Hahaha, LOL and other
exclamations that are meant to represent laughter.
According to Robin Dunbar, an evolutionary psychologist at Oxford, the
actual physical act of laughter, and not the abstract idea of something
being funny, is what makes laughing feel so good.

Emotion
The quality of a conversation using social network is awful because you
cannot sense the emotion or enthusiasm from the other person.
Emotional connections like body language and facial expression give us
feedback toward a heightened self and social awareness, promoting
thinking, reflecting and an understanding of what is going on within and
between us.

We need to stop looking at our smartphones and start connecting

emotionally to become successful personally, socially and academically.

With the statistics mentioned previously, here

is a graph of where most cyberbullying
occurs. Although, this graph does not provide
precise numbers it still approximates the
amount of cases where cyberbullying often
happens.
Today, more social media apps and networks
have been created and infiltrated into the
digital world. Therefore making it easier for
cyberbully culprits to attack and publicize
their victims. Social media like Instagram,
twitter, facebook, etc. have allowed people to
share their lives with their friends or their
so-called friends.

CDC data

Social media has developed to being a

major facet in our everyday lives. It has
become a major source of news,
communication and most of all
entertainment. Social media has created
thoughts for us to think, imaginations for
us to imagine. In the top picture, it shows
that in this generation we are limited to
only a few words, also hindering analysis
and critical thinking of topics and
questions in society. The picture at the
bottom reveals that when one allows
another to think for them, it deprives our
own imagination- resulting in the lack of
creativity.

People of social media, especially teens, have grown

obsessive over likes, re-vines, retweets, etc. There is
that constant need for publicizing and posting
everyday life. Are we revealing our true self and our
real lives? As mentioned before social media is
becoming EVERY aspect of our life; Running,
eating, going to the beach, babysitting, taking a
shower, and so on.
In the short clip attached it represents how people of
social media (mostly the younger generation) have
gradually grown obsessive over the sound of a
notification. It makes one feel important or like they
are being included with whatever is occurring on
social media.

This picture shows how children

do not see the necessity of
playing outside and getting
physically fit.
Smart phones have an impact
many kids from a very young
age.

This picture shows a student on

her phone instead of paying
attention in class
Students are becoming less
focused in class because of the
use of electronics this affects
their development in education

Instead of this couple

getting to know each other
they are spending more
time on their phones. This
leads to a lack in
communication which can
affect the relationship they
will go through in the
future.

Conclusion
To conclude, social media demonstrates how it can complicate
multiple aspects of our lives especially in how we communicate
with each other because of our lack of social skills. Also, how it
affects our health, family relationships, and how we express
certain situations. Our presentation exemplifies how having some
type of social media can negatively affect our daily lives and to
some extent how it can have an influence to the individuals
around us.
