Final Growth Statement

As I reflect back on EDUG 789- Methods of Teaching the At Risk and Disabled Student,
I was able to learn several skills that will help me once I become a teacher. This course was a
continuation of EDUG 787 Psycho-Educational Assessment for the At Risk and Disabled Student
which explained the connection between testing and educational instruction. With this course I
was able to work with for an extended time with a student in finding the weakness and strengths
of that student.
By analyzing my students assessments I was able to come up with three IEP goals to
help strengthen my students areas of weakness. In doing this I learned how important it is for the
goals to be specific. Making sure that they are measurable and that they cover specifically what
will be done to help the student meet their goals.
In knowing this information I was able to create purposeful lessons all aimed at
improving a specific area and skill. This is very helpful in getting me to practice my planning
and small group instruction. I was able to design lessons that also incorporated the student's
interests. By using materials and text passages related to sports, I was able to engage the student
to focus on the work. Incorporating various elements and activities specifically for my student
really helped in having the student produce meaningful work.
As a special education teacher it is essential to know how to evaluate each child on their
learning goals. It is equally important to create learning plans that is appropriate and that is

equally attainable with activities and the right objectives to meet the goals of the IEP. Students
that present with special needs required constant evaluation and assessments in order to
determine growth or to whether the strategies are helping or need to be altered. . This course has
helped me acquired the necessary information and put to practice the skills needed to really
honed in on the needs of the students. I am prepared to analyze and effectively designs lessons
that will teach and lead my student to become successful.
