5 Principles

Evidence- What is the teacher doing?

Discipline

When a student yells out an answer without being called on, the t
(rather than punishing the student) tells them that they need to r
hand in order to answer a question, briefly modeling the behavior
says it.

Management

When a student is talking to a nearby friend rather than staying o


the teacher tells the student to move to a seat further away befor
behavior gets out-of-hand.

Control

When the student is asked to move, the command is direct and n


negotiable, and the student reluctantly picks up his materials and
the seat as directed.

Influence

One student in particular, as has been the trend this quarter, is in


working on the material to improve his grades across all classes w
being prompted.

Engagement

The days activities are focused on individual student effort, and 1


participation is the rule. Time spent on lecture is minimized in fav
work time.

Which techniques from Chapter 5 did you see today? Explain 1-2 techniques and how
they helped to establish Climate and Culture in the classroom.
Entry Routine- Do Now- Tight Transitions- Binder Control- SLANT- On Your
Mark- Seat Signals- Props
Entry Routine: Students enter the room and see the materials that theyll need today
written on the board (in this case, their notebooks and todays homework from math
class). By the time the announcements start, students are expected to have these
materials out on their desks, ready to go. As a result, students begin a transition from
the culture of the hallway to that of the classroom, and this routine mentally prepares
them to be in math ELO.
On your mark: Similar to the example used above, students are expected to have
their notebooks and math homework out by the time announcements start. This
routine allows a smoother and faster start to the class.
