3. Procedures
Warm-up (15 min)
Aims: Students will understand why they need citations.
The purposes of using citations.
1. To distinguish other peoples ideas.
2. To make your argument stronger by using supporting evidence from other sources.
3. To give credit to the people whose words and ideas you are using.
1. Ask students about the definition of citations and outside resources.
2. Show the reasons behind citations. Student will read two articles With Citations vs. Without
Citations. I will ask them about the differences between two articles.
3. After that, they will discuss/review citations. (It depends on time.)
The instructor has encouraged them to use citations, but most of students did not. For warm-up, they
will learn what citations are and the differences between articles with/without citations. By asking
them the definition of citations and experiences of using citations, they will think about the
importance of citations.
Activity 1 (20 min)
Aims: Students will be able to produce sentences using citations.
1. Students will be divided into pairs. I will give each pair two different articles; the importance
of art education and the impacts of technology on education.
2. They will read articles about education. (5 min)
3. They will talk about one topic (5 min).
4. After reading, they will write an essay as a pair about What I learned from the article. They
can choose one topic. (They will write about an essay about education for the final.)
Activity 2 (20 min)
Aims: Students will learn some phrases for citations. In this lesson, I will not focus on the APA
format. Instead, I will encourage them to use citations using phrases below.
1. Modelling: Show how to cite outside sources and some phrases such as according to X and
X states that.

2. Students will write down three reasons why they agree with a smoking ban on campus. They
have written an essay about this topic for their midterm.
3. Give them materials as outside resources, and they will read them.
4. They will a short passage about smoking ban using citations.
Since they have already written essays about this topic, it is familiar with them. As long as I checked
their essays, they did not use citations. Therefore, by using this topic and materials, they will practice
using citations.
Closure (5 min)
For closure, I will ask them about citations.
Why do we need to cite our sources?
What phrases for citations did you learn today?
Reflection
What went well? How do you know?
What didnt go as planned?

What contingency plan did you employ?

What would you do differently next time?

Did your students meet the purpose and objectives

for this lesson? What is your evidence?

What do your students need next? What is your

evidence?

What did you learn about your glows and grows as

a teacher? What can you do to work on your areas
needing growth?

Since I used a topic about smoking ban that they

are familiar with, they could smoothly start the
writing activity.
It took more time to explain the topic. As a result,
I could not explain activities.
Also I forgot to add page numbers on each
handout so that the students seemed to lost where
we were.
If they finish writing activities, I would have
them share their writings with the peer and check
the peers grammar and citations.
There is a student who often asks questions,
which was difficult for me to handle with.
Therefore, I would expect this situation and
estimate time to answer these questions. Also, my
instructions will be more clear.
As the last activity, I asked them to write a short
passage using citations. Most of them used the
phrase According to or someone states that I
taught and cited outside resources.
In this lesson, I repeatedly told them to use
citations, and they used. In the upcoming classes,
I review this lesson and encourage them to use
citations in their essays. Also, I think the
instructor and I need to keep telling them about
this until they become to be able to use citation.
I still need to improve time management during
the class because I spent more time than I
thought. It was very difficult to move on to the
next topic once interactions with students started.
