Summary:
Essentially,thepurposeofthisarticlewastodeterminewhetherornottheBigFive
PersonalityTraitswerereallyuniversal.Theresearchersinvolvedbelievedthatprevioustestson
theuniversalityoftheBigFivePersonalityTraitshavebeendoneprimarilyonliterate,urban
populations,whicharenotrepresentativeofthemajorityofhumanevolutionaryhistory.The
experimentdescribedinthisarticleinvolved632Tsimaneadultsfrom28villageswhowere
askedtofilloutaBigFivepersonalitytraitquestionnaire(BFI)translatedintotheirnative
language.Besidesthismaincriteria,theinterviewerswhoadministeredthetestswerealsoasked
tofilloutaBFIratingthepersontheydjustinterviewed.Thisratingwasusedtomeasure
externalvalidityoftheresults.Inaddition,thespousesofthepeopleinterviewedwereaskedto
ratetheirspousesusingtheBFI,tocomparetheresultsoftheactualBFIandtheinterviewers
BFI.ThesamepeoplewerealsoaskedtoretaketheBFIafterayeartotestthestabilityofthe
results.Severalmeasuresweretakentoreducetheeffectsofsocietalpressures,acquaintance
bias,etc.Onthewholehowever,theinternalreliabilityofthefactorswaslowerthanthestandard
0.70requiredtoensurereliability,andfluctuatedeasilywithnoobservablepattern.Certaintraits
likeExtraversionandOpennessshowhigherinternalreliabilityamongmen,theyoungandthe
educated.OthertraitslikeAgreeablenessandOpennessshowedmoreinternalreliabilityinthe
restofthepopulation.Overall,theinternalreliabilityofNeuroticismwasconsistentlylow.
NeuroticismwasnegativelycorrelatedtoalloftheBigFivetraitstheotherfourtraitswere
positivelycorrelatedtoeachother.

However,despitethefactthatBigFivetraitswerenotconsistentthroughoutthe
population,twootherclustersoftraitsthatcutacrossanddrewfromdifferentBigFivetrait
groupswereconsistent.Thesetwoclusterscanbebroadlyclassifiedasprosocialityand
industriousness.AlthoughtheseTsimaneBigTwomaynotapplytoallculturalsettingsthey,by
meansofthisstudy,providesignificantevidencethattheBFItraitsdonotapplytoallcultures
andmayonlyapplytoWEIRDpopulations.Sincethisstudywasthefirstcomprehensivetestof
theBFIinasmallscale,indigenoussociety,currentresultsrequirereplicationindifferent
indigenoussocietytoconfirmanddeveloptheideasputforthinthisstudy.Thisstudyof
personalityvariationandtypesinsmallscalesocietiescouldshedlightontheselection
pressuresresponsibleforshapingearlyhumanpersonalitytraitsandtheirstructures.
Critique:
Thisideabehindthisarticle
wasreallyinterestingbecauseessentiallywhatitwassayingwasthatthesepeopleinsmall,
indigenoussocietiesaresodifferentfromusthattheycantevenbeevaluatedonthesamescale.
Theideathatpersonalitypsychologyandevolutionarypsychologycouldhavesuchanintimate
linkthatcanbedemonstratedinaparticulargroup/typeofpeopleisinterestingandexciting.Not
onlydoesthearticleattributetheinabilitytoreplicatetheBFIinthispopulationtoevolution,but
alsoitattributesittoculturaldifferences,despitethefactthattheBFIwasreplicatedinover60
differentcountries.Inmymind,thatideareallymesseswiththenaturevs.nurturedebateandI

thearticleitselfwasnot.Itwasverydry,technicalandrequiredalotofeffort.Thearticlealso
hasatendencytoberepetitive,withoutreallyelaboratingonthethingsitsrepeating.Idont
thinkIdrecommendthewholearticlefortheclass,butexpertsfromthearticlewoulddefinitely
bewortharead.IveattachedanarticlebyanAPAwriterthatdiscussesthesignificanceofthe
articleandthatwoulddefinitelybeagoodreadfortheclass.Onthewhole,theinformationfrom
thearticlewasreallyinterestingbutdespitethefactthatIputagooddealoftimeintoreadingthe
article,IdontIcompletelyunderstandsomepartsoftheresearch.
