NGSS
MS-ESS1-3: Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the
solar system.
Essential Question(s):
Stage 2- (Desired Results- How do you know they know? Collecting Data)
Performance Task
-Through what
authentic
performance task(s)
will students
demonstrate the
desired
understandings?
- By what criteria
will performances
of understanding be
judged?
Other Evidence
- Describe the different planets and objects found in the solar system by creating a
project highlighting one component of the solar system (this will be a class activity/
project)
- Students will develop a model of the solar system in order to better understand
the size ratio of planets using different spheres that we find in everyday life.
- Using models with a post, string, and correct spherical items analyze and interpret
the information provided to show planet sizes and distance between the planets to
scale.
- Compare and contrast the properties of different planets in the solar system by
identifying the similarities, differences and patterns that arise.
Desired Understandings: Concepts and Skills
Explanation
Identify what might happen if a planet did not exist?

How might the universe be viewed from a different

and similarities? Propose a way that you could inhabit
that planet.

Objectives
I can explain how we represent the distances between planets.
I can use objects in everyday life to represent the planets and understand the space between them in the universe.
I can use my knowledge to recognize the expanse of the universe.
