claims, Science is a subject tat
may be easier to teach ELL
students than other courses. The
sciences have their own
languages, new to all of the
students, (pg. 59).
By creating this safe
learning environment, it is easier
to relate course content and
student culture. Students are
often asked to write journal
entries relating something they
learned in class to something
they have experienced or already
know, expanding their
knowledge, instead of limiting it
with watered down content (pg.
59).

Culturally Responsive Teaching

Culturally responsive teaching,
or culturally relevant pedagogy, can
be defined as making connections
between the content being taught
and the varying cultures and
languages students know and use
(pg. 56).
When students struggle due to
a language barrier, or other cultural
differences, it can result in them
being placed in low-level classes.
These classes provide only a limited
version of the content regular
classes do (pg. 57).
Solutions to this disconnect
between students and education can
combated in several ways. The
contributions approach places
importance on culturally celebrated
event within curriculum. The additive

learning about cultures and being

able to critically think them about
them and develop their own
opinions and ideas on the content.
The decision-making/social
action approach creates
opportunities for students to
participate and experience different
cultures, especially social issues (pg
61).

Multicultural Learning in
the Classroom
Tim Fitzpatrick, high school
science teacher, approaches
culturally responsive teaching as
keeping it real with his students
(pg. 59). He believes that using
common sense and talking to
students create healthy and trusting
relationships.
He does this by
creating an environment where
students feel comfortable
discussing what they learn with him
and the other students. But he
