Think Tank Findings: Communication Skills

May 2015
Community Dialogue with:
1. Ben Cordle 1: Warehouse Stocking Employee
2. Rosario Guillen 2: General Manager
3. Jesse Torres 3: Shift Leader
WHAT EL PASO IS SAYING ABOUT THE LACK OF COMMUNICATION
Decision Point #1: DAY THREE
Options:
Ben Cordle says: Tony at this day should have taken the initiative to call John
instead of John calling Tony.
Rosario Guillen says: Tony should call at this point, but as well John should let his
superiors know of the absence.
Jesse Torres says: John should have relied on a follow shift leader at this point
Outcomes:
Ben Cordle says: If Tony would have went out of the way this day John would
have been at least a little better and not question his commitment to work later
on.
Rosario Guillen says: the integrity of Tony is in question and Johns willingness to
cover for his employee is troubling this is causing friction in the workplace
Jesse Torres says: John would have shared the workload and not become
encumbered by taking this task alone
Decision Point #2: DAY FOUR
Options:
Ben Cordle says: Tony should have given an update as he did not do the third
day
Rosario Guillen says: Tony should have gone to work and talk to HR about his
condition John wouldnt be so overwhelmed covering for his employee

Jesse Torres says: John should have at least had other managers and their teams
take some of Tonys hours
Outcomes:
Ben Cordle says: this is forcing John to question Tonys work ethic also forcing
him to try and cover for Tony.
Rosario Guillen says: Tony would have shown initiative and John wouldnt have
been middle man giving up his paid time to help cover for Tony
Jesse Torres says: this would have been a community effort relieving John his
overwhelming duties as well as giving others a chance to earn more money.
Decision Point #3: DAY FIVE
Options:
Ben Cordle says: Tony should have seen the situation from Johns eyes and took
the meeting as an opportunity to better himself.
Rosario Guillen says: now both are at fault this is where they need to work
together and solve their problems both need to approach the situation
professionally and not let it become personal
Jesse Torres says: John should see his shortcomings as well and take this as a
lesson for better management skills in our workplace
Outcomes:
Ben Cordle says: he could have continued his job performing at a higher
standard and become reliable in Johns eyes
Rosario Guillen says: this would allow both to fix their mistake and
miscommunication to help build a stronger and more reliable work relationship.
Jesse Torres says: John will learn proper use of his companys resources and not
take a task alone again.
[Each decision point and set of options and outcomes should include all
stakeholders]
