School
and
Community
Aviano High School is located on Aviano
American Air Force Base. The base sits at
the foot of the Dolomite Mountains,
approximately 50 miles northeast of Venice,
Italy. Aviano High School is part of the
Department of Defense Education Activity
(DODEA) Mediterranean District. Aviano
High School has been fully accredited by the
North Central Association of Colleges and
Schools since 1975.
The school opened as a junior high with
grades 1 through 10 in 1968. In 1974, 11th
and 12th grades were added. In 2002 a new
K-12 complex opened with a 9-12 high
school, a 6-8 middle school and a K-5
elementary school. Currently we have a K-5
elementary school and a 6-12 Middle/High
School.

The student body is diverse both

culturally and ethnically with students
from every state, and some students
from the local area who are tuition
paying. Many students have a foreign
born parent and are bilingual. All families
live off-base on the Italian economy, and
this interchange with the host nation
community helps foster an awareness
and understanding of the Italian culture,
language, and people. There is about a
30% turnover in student population each
year due to military reassignment.

Grading Policy:
All courses receive the same weighting with
the exception of AP. AP courses receive an
additional honor point.
