How did the war start?

Lincoln sent supplies to Fort Sumter in Charleston
Harbor (South Carolina), risking war. Before the ships
arrived, the Confederates attacked the Union fort and
ignited the Civil War.

Both sides knew the Border States were important to

hold on to. Those were the slave states that bordered free
states, and had not seceded yet. The Border States joined
the Union side.

Strengths and Weaknesses

The North had 22 million residents, while the

South had 9 (3.5 of whom were slaves).
Most factories, railroads, and shipyards were
located in the North.
The South had great generals such as Robert E.
Lee, who took advantage of fighting a defensive
war (fighting on their own turf).

Strategy:
Confederacy:

At first, the Confederacy took a defensive positionit

wanted to defeat the North so that they could be left
alone as an independent nation
Withheld cotton at the start of the war to hurt the
Northern textile industry and hopefully lure Britain
and France to the Confederate side due to a large
surplus harvest from the year before, the Confederacy
never received European aid
Gradually took the offensive and sought to wreck
Union morale

Strategy:
Union:

Goal: bring Confederate states back into the

Union
Used General Winfield Scotts Anaconda Plan
called for a naval blockade of the South to choke
its economy to death, and to capture control of the
Mississippi River to divide the South in two
Took time to implement; impatient, President Lincoln
ordered an invasion of Virginia in the summer of 1861
