Activity Descriptions

Create a photosynthesis comic strip- Students will learn about the process of
photosynthesis in class. Plants need water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight for energy. Through the
process of photosynthesis plants release oxygen into the air. For this activity students will be
expected to a comic strip for the process of photosynthesis. The activity should contain about 6-8
pictures with very few words.
Research a cell that functions in one of these parts of the body-There are over 200
different types of cells in the human body. In class, we discussed and did an activity on how the
shape of the cell depends on the job of the cell. In this activity, students will chose one of the
cells listed. They will research the cell that functions in that part of the body. They will need to
include 2 paragraphs about what the cell does, along with a picture of what the cell looks like.
Cartilage Cell
Fat Cell
Secretory Cell
Be a scientist: Discovering atoms- Atoms make up elements. Some elements can be
found in things we see in our everyday lives. For this activity, students will be given a piece of
paper with a list of elements. Students should search for examples of these elements and either
take pictures of the items and attach them to the paper or draw pictures of the items on the paper.
Create a photo collage of pictures of things around your house that are made up of
atoms-Atoms make up everything around you. For this activity, you are going to create a photo
collage. You need to find different things around your house that are made up of atoms. You then
need to take pictures or find pictures online or in magazines to create the collage. You will also need
to attach a list of items from your house that are made up of atoms.

Write a song or poem about a plant or animal cell- Just like our Atoms Family Song
that we learned in class, you can create a song that about a plant or animal cell. In the song,
include the different organelles that we learned about in class. You can chose any melody to
make up lyrics for.
Build a 3D plant or animal cell- In class, students will learn about the different
organelles that are found within plant and animal cells. Students should construct a 3D model of
one of these cells using materials at home and include the major organelles that we discussed in
class. The organelles should be labeled appropriately. On a separate piece of paper the student
should write a brief description of the function for each organelle.
Create a plant journal- Plants are all around us. most of us pass flowers and trees on our
way to school, work, the grocery store, etc. Students should get a journal and title it Plant
Journal. Students should draw pictures of the plants they see in their plant journal. For each
picture they should label any part of a plant they drew (leaves, stem, roots, petals). Students
should also include 1-2 sentences of an observation(s) they make about each plant. They should
complete at least 7 entries.

Write a story from the perspective of a flower- Sometimes when we write stories we
write from the perspective of one of the characters. For this activity students will write from the
perspective of a flower. They should write about the different parts the flower has and the
importance of these parts.Students should also write about how this flower gets its food and how
it grows. Be as creative as possible and write at least 1 page.
Write a short story about food that travels through the digestive system-Imagine that
you are an apple that has just been eaten. You are traveling through the digestive system. Write a
story from the perspective of the apple about your journey through the digestive system. Make
sure that you include: Chewing, Swallowing, Stomach, Small Intestines, and Large Intestines in
your journey. This must be at least 4 paragraphs long.
