Woman Pregnancy

Teen pregnancies are more than just high risk physically for the growing teens maturing
body, it also affects the teens socio economic and emotional health. Many sexually
active teens who come from typically single parent, low income, families, have a higher
risk of being sexually active at a younger age and tend to not have safe sex by using
condoms along with other forms of birth control. They also have a greater risk of
S.T.D.s which increases the risk for depression. These at risk youths tend to lack the
education and income for seeking treatment for proper physical and mental health.
If a girl is sexually active and chooses to not use condoms along with another
type of birth control method, her risk of becoming pregnant is high. Her physical body is
still maturing and growing. This puts the unborn child at a greater risk of being born
prematurely. Special care is needed to educate the pregnant teen regarding abstinence
from smoking, drugs, and alcohol, and the effects on the unborn child if she chooses to
abuse these substances while pregnant. Eating healthy, well balanced meals,
monitoring her weight gain during pregnancy, and avoiding continual intercourse without
a condom while pregnant, whether with multiple partners, or if there is a possibility her
partner is not monogamous are all important steps to a healthy mother and child. All
pregnant women, regardless of age, are tested, and treated for S.T.D.s. Continued

education on safe sex, the risk of HIV and other chronic diseases are vital for every
woman of any age, regardless of being pregnant or not.
The growing trend of single parent homes, increase the chances of those
households being low income or even below the poverty level. Statistics show that the
those heads of those households are mostly women raising their children without a
partner or the children's biological father being involved emotionally or financially. The
stress of being raised in a low income home raises the risk of a teenage female being
depressed, failing in school, and seeking out negative attention by confusing sex for
love due to feeling inadequate and alone. She may also try to numb those feelings of
sadness with impulsive and or chronic use of illegal drugs and alcohol.
Once the teen is pregnant, she may be encouraged to have an abortion, or give
the child up for adoption, this is a major life changing event, no matter her choice. If the
teen found out she was pregnant at a Crisis Pregnancy Center, she would be given the
resources of various agencies such a W.I.C, Medicaid, and alternative education
centers to help her remain in high school to graduate. La Leche League is another
resource example of a nursing support group for women, if the teen decides to feed the
baby the healthiest way, or the hospital will provide a Lactation Consultant to learn how
to properly nurse the infant. She would also be provided with a mentor to help her follow
through on an action plan to be as successful as possible in providing adequate
prenatal care, academic, and socio economic support for her and her future child.
Contacting an Obstetrician and making her first appointment is vital for good
prenatal care. Having blood tests ran for possible unknown diseases, such as Thyroid
Disease or a vitamin deficiency, and getting the proper care will help maintain the
pregnancy and reduce the risk of miscarriage. Consistently going to every doctor

appointment while pregnant is important with every pregnancy, especially for a teen who
may not have the emotional support of family or the father of her unborn child. Having a
responsible adult as a mentor to support the teen throughout the pregnancy and beyond
is a major factor in helping the teen have a healthy pregnancy, and making responsible
decisions in the life of the child. Preeclampsia is a common, yet dangerous, disorder
among low income pregnant teens due to poor nutrition and high amounts of emotional
stress Preeclampsia causes severe high blood pressure in the pregnant teen which
lowers the oxygen level to the unborn baby. This can cause preterm labor, low birth
weight, kidney failure, and liver failure in the young mother. It also raises the possibility
of seizures and even death. The typical teen has not developed the physical womanly
structure of an older woman. Their hips and birth canal tend to make natural childbirth
unlikely with a higher risk of C section, which results in a longer recovery time. Because
of this, the teen misses out on continuing her education. Many teens who are pregnant
or shortly after given birth have a higher risk of dropping out of school, not returning,
and either becoming employed at minimum wage jobs, or going on Welfare.
