Petroleum Engineering is a field that searches for and extracts oil and natural gas from the earth. Jobs affiliated with
Petroleum include creating reservoirs, analyzing pipelines, and finding pockets deep undersea for oil. 2011 average
starting salary: $80849. The most profitable college major in the survey, petroleum engineering focuses on finding
and extracting oil or natural gas. Petroleum Engineers specifically have to be social and must be available to travel
when and where needed based on their company affiliation

Petroleum engineers are divided into several groups:

Petroleum geologists: who find hydrocarbons by analysing subsurface structures with

geological and geophysical methods.

Reservoir engineers: who work to optimise production of oil and gas via proper well
placement, production levels and enhanced oil recovery techniques. They use computer simulations to
assist in the identification of risks and to make forecasts on reservoir potential.

Production engineers: who manage the interface between the reservoir and the well
through such tasks as perforations, sand control, artificial lift, downhole flow control and downhole
monitoring equipment. They also select surface equipment that separates the produced fluids (oil, natural
gas and water).

Drilling engineers: who manage the technical aspects of drilling both production and
injection wells. They work in multidisciplinary teams alongside other engineers, scientists, drilling teams
and contractors.

Summary of Jobs in Petroleum Engineering

What are the duties, responsibilities, and common work activities?
What is the working environment, including conditions, setting, and geographic locations?
Is this field very specialized or is it very general with many options for specialization? Explain
Geographically, where are most of the jobs in your field? (Everywhere or just some specific areas)

Petroleum Engineers are responsible for designing and developing methods for extracting oil from
the earth. Commons duties include evaluating drill sites, creating and reusing wells, and monitor/improve
production rates.
The working environment is typically researching in offices and laboratories but periodically they
must also spend time at drilling sites, usually for long periods of time. Setting and conditions are very stable
and calm. Locations depend on where the company would like for their employees to travel to.
The Petroleum field is very specialized in the manner of which they must perform duties only taught
through experience and degrees in college. Specialization is a small part of the field with three major
categories, these placements include monitoring drill sites, researching, and lastly improving engineer
technology for higher oil production.
Petroleum is very abundant in Texas, North Dakota, California, and Alaska. Internationally the most
well known geographical location for petroleum extraction is the Middle East.
