Lesson Plan EDUC 212

Descriptive Data

1.

Teacher: Allyssa Boersma Class: 1st Grade Date: When lesson is used Age: 1st Grade
Topic or Theme: Weather {Clouds}
Rationale: (reason for lesson) Learn different cloud forms
Anticipated noise level: (high, moderate, low) High
Domain: Science
2. Goals and Objectives (Identify 1 DESE Goal)

Strand 5: Process & Interactions of Earth's Systems

2.F.c. -Compare weather data observed at different times throughout the year
(hot vs. cold, cloudy vs. clear, types of precipitation)
Specific objectives: (Write 2 specific objectives)

The student will be able to identify cloudy vs. clear.

The student will be able to label the types of precipitation that forms from clouds.

3. Materials Needed (must include L.Arts/book):

Clear plastic cup

Plastic gloves

Shaving cream

Blue food coloring

Water

Paper towels

Water pitcher

"Weather Words and What They Mean" book

4. Procedure: (Procedure includes the following: step-by-step plan of action with materials, modelin
examples and planned transitions for each activity) Include the following part in your plan:
transition, opening, step-by-step, review, transition
This section of plans usually take up most of the space of lesson plan, often a full page.
Ask students to leave desk and sit on carpet area
Ask, "What do you know about weather?"
Converse with the students about different types of precipitation
and where it comes from
{hint: clouds}
Explain that students will be learning about the different types of

precipitation that falls from clouds.

Begin reading, "Weather Words and What They Mean"
children's book.
-Ask students questions during the book
-Have students ask questions at the end of book
After reading the book, present science experiment {Clouds in a Jar} to
students
-Explain Rules of Experiment:
a.) Water stays in the cups
b.) Food coloring is only used by one person in each
group
c.) Students remain sitting in their seats during
experiment
Number off students in groups of 3
Ask students to sit back in their seats
Pick one student from each group to help get supplies for
experiement {Clouds in a Jar} and have the supplies sit in the middle of the
table for each group.
Place paper towel in the center of table with empty plastic cup on top of
paper towel
Teacher fills water pitcher with cold water
Teacher takes water pitcher around to each group and fill plastic cup up 3/4
Students should be still sitting in their seats at the table
Teacher places shaving cream on top of water in the cup
One student in each group uses food coloring while wearing plastic gloves.
One student will slowly drop food coloring onto shaving cream {cloud}
Have students total the number amount of drops of food coloring it takes
before it begins "raining" with food coloring.
Ask students to sit back in the carpet area
Create a class bar graph using excel demonstrating different group totals of rain
drops before raining.

-Ask students which group had the most rain drops by

looking at the graph
- Ask students which group had the least amount of rain
drops by looking at the graph
Finally, have students play centers while teacher cleans up experiment.

5. Extension Activities (List the following: reinforcement & enrichment):

Reinforcement: Have students take home a memory matching

game of the types of precipitation fallen from
clouds.
Students are to also say aloud to
parents/guardians
the names of each type of
precipitation when flipping over
each card in the game.

Enrichment: Have students work on a worksheet where they

must cut the words to each precipitation type and match them up with the
picture. Then, they are to write a sentence for each type of precipitation describing
what happens during each type. {For example: Snow- Usually in the winter, cold
outside, describe what it looks like outside}.
6. Assessment, Reflection, and Revision
The student will be able to identify and label types of
precipitation fallen from clouds by demonstrating verbally.

Assessment of student learning. What tools will you use?

Have pictures of types of precipitation fallen from clouds with mixed up
words of precipitation types
-Have students label the words with the picture
-Have students verbally say what each precipitation is
