Bloody Fashion

By Oscar Otero Fierro

Fur is seen everywhere. Fur has traced fashion and has become
a well-recognized symbol of importance in society. But lets take in
consideration the other part of the fur industry, the animals. Would
you wear a fur if you knew what this animal went through in order for
you to wear this fashionable piece? The fur industry is one of the
cruelest industries around. With not enough interest in the issue,
millions of animals are skinned
alive each day for their fur.
According to Born free USA, More
than 50 million animals are
violently killed for use in fashion
every
year.
It
is
strongly
suggested that some modification
be done to the policies protecting
animals from such industries; to
implement a more relevant and
reliable form of policy that would
protect each and every animal
from on of the bloodiest industries
around, the fur industry.
Fur has been used for a long
time, but the usage of fur was
different. Fur was utilized as a
necessary resource in order to
survive, fur was the only insulator
around, it helped maintain the
bodies warmed. Today animals are
being captivated, put into small cages in which they are transported
and thrown to the floor as garbage, were they are left without food,
The fur industry refuses to condemn even blatantly cruel killing
methods such as electrocution. According to the American Veterinary
Medical Association, electrocution causes death by cardiac fibrillation,
which causes cerebral hypoxia, but warns that animals do not lose
consciousness for 10 to 30 seconds or more after onset of cardiac
fibrillation. In other words, the animals are forced to suffer from a
heart attack while they are still conscious. Where they await a cruel
and painful death. Fur not only affects animals, but it affects our
environment and us. Animal captivity and their death bodies produce
pounds of feces and chemicals that affect our air, waterways and
ecosystem. Fur is also a degradable material meaning that in order to
keep it the way it is, many chemicals are used to produce a fur coat,

and it coats more energy and chemicals to make a real fur coat than a
synthetic one.
Fur has become a worldwide industry. There is no law in the
United States that truly protects animals in the fur farms. As described
by PETA, No federal humane slaughter law protects animals in fur
factory farms, and killing methods are gruesome. Because fur farmers
care only about preserving the quality of the fur, they use slaughter
methods that keep the pelts intact but that can result in extreme
suffering for the animals. Overlooking the policies that protect
animals worldwide, there are no current laws in many places due to the
third world countries in which these farms are located. Fur farms are
currently located in such remote places that governments from such
countries dont even bother in regularizing or stopping this industries.
From a personal perspective, this completely unacceptable,
animals should be going though such pain as a result of this-why would
we have a policy that will not protect them?
The policies overseeing the Fur Industry needs to be modified
since the majority of the countries no longer abide by these due to the
lack of interest of such. The fur industry has to be put to a stop. The
first step I believe is to pass a law that protects animals on fur farms in
every country, in order to ensure that animals have the essential
resources we all need, such as good shelters, and access to clean and
safe food/ water. The next step is to pass a law, which would ensure
the limited use of fur in products. We dont need all these luxury items.
And the lastly to change the worlds perspective on fur through the
same way it has gained it position, through the media in order to
switch to synthetic fur.
The fur industry has killed millions of animals in the worst ways
possible, making them go through horrific situation and all for what,
fashion. With cases like these in mind shouldnt laws or policies be
modified? Indeed.
