-To teach the student the difference between summarizing and

synthesizing
-To identify main points of the story
-To teach student show to write brief but accurate summaries
-To teach student show to combine previous knowledge with new
knowledge
Text: The Ladybug and Other Insects by Gillimard Jeunesse and
Pascale de Bourgoing
Heidi by Johanna Spyri
Resources: Before and after worksheet/summarizing worksheet,
pencils, colored pencils, markers, and crayons.
Summarizing worksheet will be filled out accurately
1. I will start by asking Naveah how she is doing. She was
absent last week so we will do some catching up. This will
help me know how she is feeling that day and how much I
can expect from her that day
2. I will ask her if she knows what it means to summarizing.
3. I will explain to her what synthesizing and summarizing are.
4. I will show her the cover of The Ladybug and ask her to write
down some facts about what she knows about ladybugs.
5. Then I will read the book to her.
6. I will stop every once in a while to ask her if she knew some
of the facts that the book stated.
7. After reading the book I will have her write down 2 or 3
things that she learned from the book.
8. I will show her how the knowledge that she had before
reading the book can help her better understand what we
just read.
9. We will look to see if anything she wrote from before the
reading was no longer true after the reading
10.We will move on to the second book, Heidi.
11.I will review with her what it means to summarize and ask if
she has any questions about it. I will provide an example of
summarizing and ask if she can come up with an example
12.We will talk about the key parts of summarizing, such as
summarizing text in parts (Beginning of the story, middle of
the story, and end of the story).
13.I will read the book to her and we will stop 2 times during the
book. First we will stop to summarizing the beginning of the

book in one or two sentences. The second time we stop we

will summarizing the middle of the book, including identifying
the problem. After the book is finished we will summarize the
end of the book, including how the problem was resolved.
In summarizing, we go in the order of events of the story
We want to keep our summaries brief, but accurate
Summarizing is different from synthesizing in that synthesizing
uses prior knowledge to enhance learning. Summarizing is simply
stating the facts, events, and main points of a story.

Reflection:
This lesson went pretty well. I had another student with me today. He was very
quiet. Naveah understood the concept of summarizing very well. She picked up
quickly on what I was asking her to do and seemed to enjoy it. The other boy that
was with me didnt pick up on it as quickly. I had a hard time changing my
explanations of summarization to help him understand better. Next time I teach I
am going to think through several ways of explaining what I need to teach. Just
because one person understands it one way, doesnt mean everyone will
understand it that way. I need to remember that and always be prepared to explain
things in a different way to better help my students.
