For 30- 35 minutes, objectively record an infants or toddlers interactions
with and responses to objects and caregivers. Include the infant or
toddlers movements, sounds/language and facial expressions. Record a

minimum of five interactions with and responses to objects and caregivers.

Child EM is playing in a bouncer
Child EM watches the sounds and lights on the bouncer
EM gets excited when the lights flash and it catches her attention
EM begins to kick her feet and arms when the music goes on
EM begins to smile and make soft noise as the bouncer sings and lights
up
EM starts to get scared when the music changes
EM starts to cry
EM has big tears falling from her eyes
Child EM begins to kick her arms and legs because she was getting
upset
Child EM gets upset and then a caregiver picked her up
Child EM starts to smile when the caregiver picked her up
Child EM starts to giggle when the caregiver bounces her up and down

Interpreting behaviors or sounds. Observe and objectively record two


situations when a caregiver interpreted an infant or toddlers behavior
and/or sounds.
Situation 1:

Child EM is sitting in a bounce chair with music and lights playing. EM begins to kick her
arms and legs when the song comes on. Child EM beings to get fussy when the song and
lights turn off. EM starts to cry and then the lights and sounds come back on and she stops
crying. EM now has her eyes wide open and looking at all of the lights.

Situation 2:

EM is now sitting in a high chair watching a caregiver who has her food. The caregiver hands
EM a spoon and EM threw it on the floor. The caregiver then picks up the spoon again and
hands it to EM. EM holds the spoon in her hand for a while and then drops it on the floor
again. EM starts to cry and throw her arms and legs around. The caregiver sits next to her
and begins to feed her. EM has stopped crying and is eating her green pea baby food
